We went on this trip in Sep 2013. Here are a few tips.

1) If at all possible, extend your stay at the same hotel for an extra day or two and book the boat trip to Capri. It'a an all day outing that stops at several Capri Grottos, including the Blue Grotto (extra fee) which is wonderful. On the RS tour you also get a boat ride up and down the Amalfi coast so this Capri trip repeats some of that but well worth it.

2) We had good weather but it poured the week before we arrived and the day we left - bring rain gear.

3) If you haven't already see if you can get a Sea Facing room. They're probably gone by now, but worth a shot just in case.

4) If you're prone to motion sickness bring meds, for the bus boat and rides, especially back from Sorrento at night on a very curvy road.

5) By all means shoot the scenery, but don't overlook shots of the people you'll see all about. Them make wonderful subjects

Anyone going to the September 2014 workshop ?
Do we need to bring a laptop and a tripod ?
Looking forward to this workshop.
Dan Hartford Jul 23, 2014 at 08:20 PM

Hi Daniel, We went on this in Sept 2013. Much of your shooting will be hand held but there were several occasions where a Tripod was a near necessity. Particularly Sunset shots in Sorrento and night shots of Positano. Our guide did quite a bit of image review so having a Laptop to select images for the review sessions and to use to transfer them to a thumb drive is good (not to mention using the LT as a backup copy of the images). -- Dan

Absolutely bring tripod and laptop. We stayed in Salerno for the week previous and enjoyed it - not a big city, and a good jumping-off point for sightseeing. We rented a car and took a beautiful ride down the coast to the Ancient Greek ruins of Paestum. Another great photography opportunity. Dan's tips above are spot on. It can still be hot at this time of year, so be prepared for that as well. Enjoy!

I'm thinking of signing up for the April 2014 tour. Would appreciate comments on this trip from those who've participated in recent tours. (I would rate myself an advanced beginner - or an aspiring enthusiast in photography.) Thanks, Marilyn

Hi all. I am Joel and will be going on this photo tour with my wife Betty. We are both photographers who live in the Boston suburbs.

This is our 3rd Road Scholar photo tour. Our others were Yosemite and the High Sierras with Mark Citret and Southwest Utah's Canyons. We have done other photo tours to the Southwest with Friends of Arizona Highways.

If anyone is interested, some of my photos can be found at www.flickr.com/photos/joelfreedman1.

Hi Joyce, Irene; I'm Dan and will be going on this tour with my wife Ellen in Sept 2013. Looking forward to meeting you. Of the pair, I'm the photographer.

This will be our 4th RS trip. 2 of our prior trips were photo related and very well done (Arches/Canyonlands and Teton/Yellowstone - both with pohotographer Robert Winslow).

If interested you can see some of my photography at www.danhartfordphoto.com. If anyone else on this trip have photo galleries online - please share.

Due to scheduling issues, it looks like we'll be getting into Naples a day early and are thinking of trying to get to the Blue Grotto near Naples the day before our RS pickup date. We don't yet know what hotel we'll be using in Naples though. If anyone else on the RS trip is thinking in a similar way, let us know.

Hi all - thinking about this tour for 2013 and as you all should have just returned, am interested in your comments. Among other things, did you get good photos?

One thing is how were the rooms at the hotel? If we're going all the way to Italy I'd be very interested in a room with a view and one with a queen or king bed and decent size bathroom (on TripAdvisor bathroom size was a common issue at this hotel). What was your experience?
Joyce Stauffer Dec 04, 2012 at 09:24 AM

We had a nice room on the front of the hotel with an ocean view. We had 3 beds in our room, which was nice, we could spread our equipment out. The bathroom was adequate. We got some beautiful pictures. We did back-to-back programs, going on to Tuscany and Umbria after the Amalfi Coast. You can view our pictures, if you like. https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/sredir?uname=jostauffer&target=ALBUM&id=5815504481738601953&authkey=Gv1sRgCOWs-s2isNvR0QE&feat=email

We are wondering who are fellow photographers are for the upcoming Sept. 11 program and where they live. We live in Torrance, California and are looking forward to a great experience.

Looking forward to meeting you, Maxine. DH Barry and I staying in Salerno for the week prior - next week! Excited to see the sights!
