My husband and I will be attending the 5/20 as well. We will be flying Tucson-Dallas-Heathrow-Pisa WHEW!
We will be staying and extra 4 nights in Lucca. Can anyone suggest a day trip from Lucca to any of the nearby wine areas.

Donna Giroux and I are coming to the May 20 program. We are flying from Indianapolis to Chicago to Frankfort to Florence May 15/16. Staying in Florence until taking the train to Lucca on the 20th. After the program, we are going to Como via Milan and then returning to Milan to fly home on June 2. I will be flying direct to Newark. Donna will be flying to Washington and then to Indianapolis. Is there anyone else going to Florence first or Como last?

I learned how to make pasta, gnocchi, and more! While I knew how to do some things, there were enough challenges and techniques taught to make the class interesting and fun.

My wife and I are both avid amateur cooks. Is the level of cooking instruction beyond "this is how to chop an onion"? The trip sounds great if the cooking instruction is really hands on
and somewhat challenging. We would love to chat with

This course will challenge and increase skills of "avid amateur cooks". It is absolutely hands on and the Chef Instructor is skilled, talented and extremely professional. In addition the atmosphere enhances an understanding and appreciation of the Joy of the entire process. "How to chop an onion?" As we say in the south "bless your heart". I would go again tomorrow and be assured I'd learn a whole new set of skills and level of appreciation. And, as a bonus you,lol have a great time.

My end-of-October group learned to make 16 dishes (four courses on each of four days). The cooking school was more focused on how to combine items and at what point than on ‘learning how to correctly chop an onion’. We did, however, learn to make pasta from scratch. The ‘field trips’ were a highlight of the program. We visited a winery, olive oil ‘factory’, cheese factory, etc., where experts introduced us to their products and taught us how to appreciate good quality. Our group has suggested to Road Scholar that a “Part II” for this program be created for those who have completed Part I. Additionally, my family requested that I make and serve an Italian Thanksgiving. I didn’t serve turkey, but my family was thrilled with the four courses that I made myself as a result of attending this program!

Cathy: I didn't even go into the field trips, nor what a FANTASTIC leader Christina is, along with her intown tour buddy! I also thoroughly enjoyed visiting the market and watching people examine each product minutely. I was in a group of ten and it was perfect. I also really enjoyed Lucca and felt like I was back in the Florence of 15 years ago!! It should also be mentioned that the focus and subsequent discussions of each days menu was dependent on what was FRESH at the morning market. I think a PART 2 is brilliant - SIGN ME UP!

Our group was VERY lucky... there were only 7 of us. I understand that most groups are 14. I can't imagine 14 people being in that kitchen at one time, and everyone getting to participate. It should be noted that the menu given in the Road Scholar 'program details' is probably NOT what you will be making. As you said, the menu depends on what's available at the time. My travel partner and I were quite disappointed, but the chef did accommodate our one request (one of the reasons we signed up was for that menu item!). As a side-note, do NOT go to Lucca the last week of October. They were setting up for Comic Con (yes, little Lucca has a week of Comic Con), and between the construction noise beginning at 6:30 every morning, and the lack of a square in front of the hotel (our view was hundreds of tents being erected which we had to walk/drive around), it took away some of the charm of the city.
