Hello Everyone,

I'm going on the Nov. 1 2014 trip. I'm interested in taking a side trip to Des Voeux peak on Taveuni, on the day that we arrive on the island. This would be at the time of the afternoon snorkeling that day. There are supposed to be spectacular views of nearby islands and Lake Tagimoucia, in the crater. I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in making this trip. I've been in contact with the hotel there and they tell me they can arrange transport with a local driver. They tell me the cost would be about 300 FJD, or about 160 USD, which is kind of costly for one person. If anyone is interested in going we could share the cost.

What do you think?

Sorry I'm not up to major hiking but glad to meet a fellow traveller. See you at LAX on the 1st. Kitty

Hello Everyone, I guess I didn't do everything right coming into the discussion board. My name is Dwain. I don't think there is actually a lot of hiking involved just going to the peak. The driver takes you there in a 4-wheel drive vehicle. I understand it is quite a hike to go into the lake.

I bought a Neosport Lycra/Spandex suit for a trip to Galapogos where there is an uprising of cold currents. Did the trick and was easy to get in and out of. Less than $30 at LeasurePro. This company gave me great service when one of our mini-fins got damaged. Full replacement and no cost for shipping! Also used it in the Caribbean when I was in a cave with ice cold water. Could still feel the cold, but was a lot more comfortable then the others. Also bought the little booties that go inside the fins. Will be going with me on the Nov 1 trip.

My wife and I are going on the October 18 trip. I've checked and the water there is in the 74F range in October (their early spring). A dive shop owner who's run seven trips to Fiji recommended a 3mm full wetsuit. The early RS brochure says that "no inoculations required." The CDC recommends Hep A and Typhoid: http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/fiji
Cynthia Liss Sep 04, 2014 at 02:12 AM

Richard, I brought a "lavacore" suit-top and bottom. Several people on our trip did not use suits, however i enjoyed mine. I did not prepare for any inoculations however Hep A wouldn't be a bad idea. We were told to bring ear plugs but were not told when we were to use them. You Will need then in the little airplane ride...it really hurt my ears. I loved this trip, it was fantastic!
Richard Treiber Sep 04, 2014 at 11:13 AM

Thanks for the earplug tip. I understand that the Lavacore is about as warm as a 2mm suit. I get chilled easily so I'm glad to have the suit. Did you encounter jellyfish issues on your trip?

Hello all, my wife and I are looking at this RS trip for early 2015. We are in our early 70s. We have snorkeled some in Hawaii but mostly in fairly sheltered bays. How about this program--are wind, waves and currents going to be a big challenge or are conditions usually pretty calm?
Cynthia Liss Sep 04, 2014 at 02:14 AM

I foud the conditions calm, once while at Paradise hotel it rained while we were in the water, it was quite magical.

How are the ocean currents and what effect might they have on a 110 lb woman who swims well, but not strongly. Love to float and snorkel in lagoons

Diane How did you like your trip in Nov
Dick

I had a great time. There were 14 of us, very nice people. The snorkeling was wonderful. I took 800 underwater photos. Amazing coral.

Diane Gabe Oct 30, 2013 at 03:02 PM

I'm going alone on the Nov 2 trip. I can't find a wet suit top (all out of season) - do you think I'll need one? If so, can they be rented? I'm both excited and scared. I've snorkeled in the Caribbean and Hawaii - and Juneau! but without currents.

Hi! I am a single on the program starting Nov 9th. Any other singles on the trip? Think it should be great.
