Just saw the report of tornado damage in northern Italy. Any effect on our trip starting tomorrow??

Arri Sendzimir May 02, 2013 at 03:19 PM

It's been a while since I've been abroad. Do the hotels have American plugs or do I need to bring an adapter?
Richard Johnson May 02, 2013 at 04:56 PM

Arri - Italian hotels do NOT have American plugs, so you will need adapters, and a small transformer if your camera needs one. Some cameras can be re-charged using 120 V (which would require a small transformer), and some will take 220 V, so just an adapter is needed.

Thanks.

We are considering this trip in 2014. We are asking the travelers on the 6/7 May trip to let us know about the travel times between the airports (Verona, and Milan)and the RS hotels. On the return do you have to get up real early, like 4 AM as we did returning from Venice, so as to get to the airports for early flights We would like to know to help plan our independent flights. Thanks Paul & Kay Wisniewski
Richard Johnson May 02, 2013 at 04:53 PM

Paul and Kay - My wife and I made this trip last year. The departure time from the RS Hotel in Como was not too early - around 7:30, as we recall. Still time to have some breakfast before heading home. Our flight out of Milan didn't leave until early afternoon. Dick & Nancy Johnson

Thanks Based on your comment, It appears to me that the flight from MIlan was diredt to the states . Is that correct? Paul

To the Zieglers- Are you still planning to be at the Hotel Academia? Maybe we can take the taxi together to the airport on the 7th as you suggested. Sorry I didn't reply sooner. Alice

Alice Rostirolla Jan 24, 2013 at 02:20 PM

To Dorothy, Richard & Nancy- Thanks for the info. The bus/train then taxi were the only options listed so far, but I guess that's for the people who want to go to Riva early. When I called RS they said there would be a tour bus for pickup at the airport on the particular day. Will do like you and stay at the Hotel Academia then meet the tour bus. Thanks again. Alice

This is Lee (aka Alfred on his passport!) Zeigler's wife Peggy writing back to Alice. We, too, are taking the May 6th Italian Lakes trip and also will be coming in to Verona (by train from Zurich) on May 6th itself. We are happy to have the recommendation of the Academia Hotel, and will try to make a reservation there for that night. Perhaps we can share a taxi to the airport with you the morning of May 7th. I spoke to RS today and was told that the pick-ups for "independent" travelers is usually between 9 a.m. and noon at the airport, but that we will be given the exact time/place three weeks before the trip begins. -- Peggy

May 6, 2013 La Dolce Vita trip--
Anyone going, who would like to discuss it at this early time. I am hoping to spend a couple of days in Verona at the beginning of the trip, and then hopefully find three people to split the cab ride to Riva Del Garda (much easier than trying to ride the bus and train whilel dealing with luggage). Alice
Dorothy Masters Jan 23, 2013 at 03:46 PM

When I went a couple of years ago several folks who were already in Verona met us at the airport & took the tour bus to Riva. Check with RS. Wonderful tour & Mara was great. Enjoy!
Richard Johnson Jan 23, 2013 at 03:53 PM

Alice - My wife and I did this same trip to Italy last Sept, and had a wonderful time. We went 3 days early, and stayed at the Academia Hotel right in the heart of Verona. Great place to stay - very central, great staff, etc. Then, on the 3rd day, we went back to the Verona Airport, and joined the rest of the Road Scholar tour group that was arriving that day, and took the bus to Riva del Garda - at no extra cost to us. Just had to pay for the taxi from downtown Verona to the airport. and that's only 5 miles away. Worked out very well. Dick & Nancy Johnson

Anyone leaving from JFK?

Richard Johnson Aug 22, 2012 at 05:10 PM

My wife and I fly to Verona on 9/14 for a few days of adjustment before the 9/18 tour. Anyone else going early? We'll be staying at the Hotel Academia.
Ronald Squires Aug 29, 2012 at 05:55 PM

Hello Richard. My wife and I will see you on Sept 18th. We decided that, while we were "in the neighbourhood" we'd return to our favourite valley in Switzerland, the Lauterbrunnen. We arrive in Zurich on the 8th, head to Lauterbrunnen by train for a week then on to Lugano for a long weekend. We pick up a car there and drive to Verona. I understand that driving in Italy is a different experience so if we don't make it you'll know why
Richard Johnson Aug 29, 2012 at 10:19 PM

Ronald - Thanks for your note. Enjoy your time in Switzerland - and we look forward to meeting you in Italy. Dick Johnson
