Our grandson, Casey, is going with my husband and me on the July 6-14 trip.

I just finished the book, "French Toast," by Harriet Welty Rochefort. Wonderful discussion of the differences between the French and Americans. She is a very entertaining writer.

I'd like to suggest the book Paris, Paris: Journey into the City of LIght, by David Downie. It's a series of essays about sections of the city. He is knowledgeable and very funny and knows Paris from many angles. He lives there and has a wonderful background in its history, literature, and the real culture of today (the chapter on Mitterand's "contributions" is hilarious.)

I was on the tour on Bastille Day in 2012. The guide discouraged us from going into the crowded streets at the Eiffel Tower for concern about the physical safety of our young ladies. There are many drunks etc. We braved the crowds to get to a resturant for diner that evening but returned to the hotel before the fireworks began. We could hear the fireworks from our hotel but took the guides recommendation and stayed in the hotel. I had specifically picked that week to go because of Bastille Day. We loved the tour - it was fabulous, but this was a minor disappointment.

I see Bastille Day is July 14 during the July 9-17 program. Is anyone interested in going to the Eiffel Tower that evening to see the fireworks? I assume we will be back from our excursion to Giverney by the afternoon.
Patricia Grabill Jun 03, 2013 at 11:16 AM

We were on the trip last year--amazing time--and weren't there for Bastille Day. However I HAVE been in Paris for Bastille Day, and the fireworks at the Eiffel Tower are quite wonderful. Hope you DO go.

any suggestions on how to return to hotel near bastille after the fireworks?

My granddaughter Olivia, age 11, and I are on the July 6th program to Paris. I noticed we are visiting Monet's home at Giverny on Thursday July 11th. Not too far away is the charming medieval village of Honfleur. Its quaint narrow streets and medeival homes are unique. There is nothing like it in America. If Honfleur sounds interesting to you, we can probably change the visit to the D'Orsay to the afternoon of the 9th. I look forward to meeting all of you and having a wonderful trip.

Our grandson, Casey Eshelman, will be on the July 6th program with me and my husband. He will turn 12 on June 23 and would love to correspond with kids in the group. If Olivia would like to send him an email, his address is: caseyesh@gmail.com

Coming for the July 16th program with 14 yr old Zoe. I see Friday afternoon is free time and there is a free fashion show at the Galeries department store that we are interested in seeing. If you would like to go, call 33 1 42 82 36 40 to make free reservations. U can check it out on line by Googling Galeries la Fayette fashion show. Can't wait to get to Paris and meet everyone!
