I got Yuan from AAA the next day!
Robert Yoshioka Sep 18, 2014 at 07:39 PM

Lucky you! Our local AAA DOES NOT carry Yuan Currency Packs. Go figure...we must be at the end of the western world or something...We checked with Wells Fargo, and they will deal with anyone anywhere, with no fees or no charges for shipping packets. This whole experience has been very interesting. Back in the day, it was travelers checks that got one through foreign it is ATM's and credit cards!

Robert Yoshioka Sep 18, 2014 at 02:38 PM

Hi! I believe if you access the itinerary and then go to the websites for each hotel listed, you will be taken to the hotel's website and there can see the sorts of bathrooms typically available. Tedious, yes, but the best way to find out what it is that you need to know. I personally am hoping that most of the hotels will have hangers that I can take into the bathroom/shower to hang my drip dry easily rinsed shirts and pants...figure I will have to do this only once or twice during the trip, this making the packing easier and lighter. Remember to bring travel toilet paper, soap "leaves," with which to do laundry, or, as our friends who just returned from their trip to China did...they just bit the bullet and sent stuff out to be washed and folded...a little pricey, but what the are on vacation, right? We also bought Chinese Yuan from Wells Fargo Currency Exchange website...if you purchase more than $1,001.00 (yes, that is correct) they waive the shipping and processing fee. Turnaround is typically two business days. We got $1,100.00 exchanged and money came yesterday!

Roberts comment is great, and hopefully it works for you. However, we didn't always stay at the hotel stated on the itinerary.
Robert Yoshioka Sep 18, 2014 at 03:07 PM

Well, what can I say...ESP anyone? :)

Like to have some information regarding access to showers in the various accommodations provided during this program
Gloria Kennedy Sep 18, 2014 at 11:25 AM

The accomodations we had on our May trip were very good. Private baths and showers in each room.

Charlotte McGee Sep 08, 2014 at 11:19 PM

Hi, Peter! Please do let us have your comments on this trip after your return and whether or not the masks were necessary. Thanks, Charlotte
Peter Schaeffer Sep 09, 2014 at 08:43 AM

Will do, Charlotte.

I ordered the 3M 8511 Particulate N95 Respirator with Valve 10 Pack from Amazon. Having read all of the equivocal literature and reviews, it seemed an adequate option. Probably won't be fun wearing it, but better than nothing.
Robert Yoshioka Sep 08, 2014 at 04:08 PM

You made a good choice...we also got this or another one like it. They are disposable, and could last for a number of wearings. We have 5 each...I believe from the literature, one can wear each one until they are dirty...they do not wash...I suspect that if you wear them and don't run a marathon, they should last for a couple of uses (or a couple of days) how ever you do it. Have a great time...we are on the October 7 tour. Sorry to miss you...we will all have a blast.
Faye Sibert Sep 14, 2014 at 12:43 AM

My group in May did not wear masks or respirators. It really didn't seem necessary. A few Chinese wore them here and there but don't recall any Americans wearing them. Beijing had the most visable pollution. A couple of days were clear and we saw the hills.

Vermont Traveler Sep 08, 2014 at 07:43 AM

I have friends locally whose daughter and family have lived in Beijing for several years until a month ago. They visited early in the summer. He showed me his last mask worn in Beijing. Bits of gray particulate matter all over the outside of it. He is a retired physician and he and his wife both said everyone wears masks outdoors there and that I should get them for the trip. What he showed me appeared to be made of white disposable "fabric" with loops that go around the ears. Chinese characters on the mask...obviously they got them from their daughter's supply in Beijing. I'm on the Oct. 18 departure and plan to get some here before I go, but haven't researched where or what kind.
Peter Schaeffer Sep 08, 2014 at 09:32 AM

Thanks Vermont. I'm thinking I'll get this 10-pack for myself and my wife: If we don't use them it's no great loss.

Peter Schaeffer Sep 07, 2014 at 09:01 PM

No doubt this has been discussed frequently, but here goes: what are people's views on face masks? I read every position imaginable on them on China travel forums. Anyone?

p.s. I'm in the September 13 tour.

Michael Thoryn Sep 07, 2014 at 09:18 PM

We're on your trip and bought two as a precaution. About $20, cloth, with carbon insert.
Robert Yoshioka Sep 07, 2014 at 11:42 PM

I, like you googled and researched the possibilities, pro and con of masks. We have a friend who is in China right now, and has not used the masks he took. Go figure. If you have masks and you do not use them, then leave it with the tour guide for someone else to use. As I said, we are taking disposalbe masks. Hope this helps. There are numerous brands, but we went with 3M. RBYoshioka

Is anyone arriving in Beijing on October 8, Air China #996, from Houston, arriving at something like 4:40 AM. Is anyone else sharing this crazy flight from Houston? So far there are 4 of us here on this discussion board on the October 7 tour! Come out, come out, wherever you are! :) RBYoshioka
