Hi all - Phil and I arrive at 2:05 - too late I'm afraid to connect with you 11:40 people on Alilaguna. If anyone else is arriving near 2:00 let us know! If not, we'll see you at the hotel (I'm hoping we'll be able to make it to the 4:00 on time!)
Sterling Lauer Oct 27, 2014 at 06:44 PM

Greetings! This is a reply to the discussion about the transportation from the airport to the hotel in Venice. We did this trip last year (it was wonderful!), and after reading many trip reports from various sites, we opted to take a taxi, and were SO glad we did, because the taxi took us directly to the hotel dock. Others who opted for the Alilaguna had to drag their luggage from the Rialto stop, and it was difficult. Some couldn't find the hotel on their own, and it took hours to get there. So you might want to consider the taxi.

Robert "Linc" Clay Oct 27, 2014 at 09:02 AM

Dixie & I also are scheduled to arrive on KL 1653 at 11:40. We would love to join you all. The Alilaguna web site says tickets are available in the airport at the transportation ticket office and near baggage claim 3 & 5. The airport map (Italian version) shows three ticket locations in the baggage claim area. (The English version does not show these, but I assume/hope they are really there....) Should we pick a baggage claim location to meet?
Mary Williams Oct 27, 2014 at 03:27 PM

Let's choose baggage flame 3, and if that office is not open, go to the transportation ticket office.
Robert "Linc" Clay Oct 28, 2014 at 11:11 AM

Meeting at baggage #3 sounds good to us. If we get a critical mass of folks (5 or 6) we could consider a water taxi per Sterling's comment. We are traveling light and we have downloaded mapping apps plus have paper maps, so while I expect Venice navigation to be a challenge, I believe that we can figure it out. It is only about 200 or 300 yards to the hotel from the Rialto stop. I have walked it backward in Google streetview, so I assume we can navigate there successfully, although not necessarily flawlessly....

I arrive in Venice at 11:40 am and plan to take the Alilaguna to the Rialto stop and then walk to the hotel. I was in Venice 18 months ago and consider the Alilaguna to be more comfortable when you have luggage than the vaporetto/bus method of getting there. It is more expensive (15 euros), but not nearly as expensive as a taxi and, like a taxi, you travel across the lagoon toward Venice by water. If anyone is arriving about the same time, we could go together.

Hi Mary - My sister and I are scheduled to arrive at the Venice airport at 11:55 a.m. on November 7. Do you have an idea of what would be a good meeting place? It sounds like you could be our transportation guide.
Mary Williams Oct 26, 2014 at 08:15 AM

The first place I will go is to the place in the airport that sells Alilaguna tickets -- I don't know where that is, but I'm sure there will be signs or an information desk. We could meet there, with our Road Scholar luggage tags. My flight number (from Amsterdam) is KL 1653 (in case my flight is delayed). What is yours?

Debby and Phil Lewis Oct 01, 2014 at 01:55 PM

We will be arriving in Venice on 11/7/14 at 2:05 p.m. - would love to get together with others for the trip to the hotel. (We are flying from Boston, SwissAir the evening of 11/6 - any chance anyone else is on the same flight?)

Cheryl Sep 19, 2014 at 12:19 PM

Is anyone else arriving in Venice on 11/6/2014? I was hoping to make the trek to the hotel with another program participant if possible.

Janet Weber Mar 10, 2014 at 11:44 PM

I stayed on after our program ended last year and did a day trip to Padua (Giotto fresco cycle in the Scrovegni Chapel, and the very moving pilgrimage site of the Basilica of St Anthony), and an overnight trip to Ravenna for the Byzantine mosaics. Both trips were outstanding, I was so happy to have had the opportunity to see these places.

Thank you

Carol Molten Mar 10, 2014 at 11:41 AM

Florence, for sure - ! Fly into Florence airport at Peretola - I recommend the Orto de Medici Hotel, see their website, ask for a garden room, then a scenic train ride to Venice to meet the group.
George Dillon Mar 11, 2014 at 03:59 PM

Thank you.

George Dillon Mar 10, 2014 at 11:26 AM

any thoughts or suggestions about a three or four day trip before the Venice trip? Thanks. My wife and I are going on the November trip.
