I am going on the 2/18 trip to Nicaragua and then the 2/25 trip to Costa Rica. Anyone else going those times? I love to speak Spanish although I don't speak it well! Last year I visited my foreign exchange student from Paraguay. I love everything about the Latin American culture! I am also going to Nicaragua with Road Scholar the week before the Costa Rica trip.

I am considering this program. How do they determine your placement in the Spanish language classes?
Kathy Small-Mazzara Oct 27, 2013 at 08:17 PM

I just got back from the Costa Rica program yesterday. It was wonderful! In order to determine your language level, Road scholar has you fill out a test before you go and then when you get there they show you pictures and ask you to talk in Spanish about the pictures. They divide the group into three groups, beginner, intermediate and advanced. I would high recommend the trip.
Mary Jacobs Oct 29, 2013 at 09:21 AM

Thank you, Kathy! Two more questions - What is your opinion of the language instruction ? Do you feel that your Spanish improved by attending this program?

Marjorie,
Kathy Small-Mazzara Oct 11, 2013 at 04:56 PM

Marjorie, I leave NYC, fly to Atlanta and get into San jose at 7:45 p.m. So I guess I will see you at the hotel. Good luck making your connection and meeting up with the others! Kathy

Marjorie Kristen Oct 11, 2013 at 04:02 PM

I am leaving out of Dulles; I understand 2 other people will leave Miami for San Jose on an American Airlines flight leaving at 10:00. I hope to meet you at the gate once it is announced.

Anyone leaving out of JFK International for the 10/15 trip? Kathy

Melba Hensel Oct 04, 2013 at 12:09 PM

My husband & I did the trip in early March. We bought TEVA sandals, polypro quick-dry socks, shirts and underwear (good prices on-line from Sierra Trading, because the shoes can be expensive). The sole of the TEVAs is rugged enough to handle the trails even though they were wet.We did the nature hike at LaSelva and got REALLY WET when the rain began while we were on the trail, and had to go through the locked access to get back to the lodge. Rain poncho was essential attire. Regular sandals would not work well, but something like TEVA, Keen or Columbia would work well. Hope that helps
Marjorie Kristen Oct 07, 2013 at 03:20 PM

That helped greatly, thanks so much for taking the time to share. I had thought a sneaker type shoe, such as the fuseion would be best, but delighted to hear sandals worked for you. The clothing hints were good, but I have some REI shirts and pants that I think will work.

Marjorie Kristen Oct 04, 2013 at 10:57 AM

I am interested in hearing from anyone who has taken the Costa Rica Spanish Language program to learn what type of trails one walks on. Are walking shoes necessary or are trails firm enough for sandals firm enough for walking?

Marjorie Kristen Oct 04, 2013 at 10:08 AM

Yes, Kathy, I am on the 10/15 trip to Costa Rica and was delighted to hear from you. The last rip I went on had several comments on this discussion board including helpful hints about shoes and clothing. I'd love to hear from people on this same trip as well as those who have already taken it. Marge

Hi Marjorie, I am going on the trip by myself how about you? Do you know a lot of Spanish? Have you been learning Spanish in preparation for the trip? Kathy
Marjorie Kristen Oct 06, 2013 at 08:12 PM

I am going alone; I'm eager to meet you.I have been meaning to bone up on my Spanish but fear my intentions have not been well implemented.
Kathy Small-Mazzara Oct 08, 2013 at 02:44 PM

I am looking forward to meeting you too. I like the way you expressed yourself. I have been trying to learn Spanish for years, so I am really trying to prepare for the trip.
