Hi Pat and Sally - Thank you for your replies about our guides and the availability of nature field guides. It happens that we know the author of some of the best field guides for Costa Rica. He did his graduate work in Costa Rica, married a Costa Rican, and has led dozens of nature tours there. I own one his guides which I'll be bringing, but I was trying to save weight in my suitcase by not bringing more books. Again, thanks!

Pat Dewald Apr 03, 2013 at 01:44 PM

The guides carry books with them. You can get a nice nature book at the Arenal observatory and I found a beautiful nature book at the Wyndham Hotel in San Jose.

It's nice to hear from some of you on the April 10th trip.. I'm wondering: I just bought a book on Costa Rican Butterflies and Moths which is nice and small. I'd also like to bring my Costa Rican Bird Guide, but it's BIG. Does anyone know if our guides carry field guides about the birds and butterflies and blossoms with them? Sure would save space in my suitcase!
Sally Stelljes Apr 03, 2013 at 06:40 AM

Hi Dorothy--our guides were very knowledgeable about birds, butterflies & blossoms that we saw on field trips etc. on one of the boat trips we were given a brochure for identification purposes. Plus all the shops have many books to peruse or purchase.

My father, Floyd, and I are traveling together on the April 10th trip. Floyd is coming from Ontario, Canada, and I'm from CT -- both flying out of NJ, arriving late on the first day. Excited to be in Costa Rica soon!
Sally Stelljes Apr 02, 2013 at 07:35 PM

This is a great trip. We thoroughly enjoyed all the diverse activities & locations.
Jane Gerken Apr 07, 2013 at 07:47 PM

My friend Terry and I are also flying out of Newark on April 10 and arriving late United flight 1082. Maybe we'll be on the same plane.
Joyce Thomson Apr 07, 2013 at 09:32 PM

Yes, we'll be on the same plane. We can be on the look-out for our Road Scholar luggage tags on our carry-ons in the waiting area.
Jane Gerken Apr 08, 2013 at 05:49 PM

Yes, we can do that.
Jane Gerken Apr 08, 2013 at 05:50 PM

We have seats 22D & E. Look forward to meeting you

Nice to meet another member of our trip. We won't arrive until late on the first day. Our biggest interests are the birds and the butterflies. But everything about the trip sounds interesting.
Shirley Casperson Mar 15, 2013 at 07:21 PM

Rosemary and I are arriving from Dallas and will not get there until 7:00 pm. ere untail 7:00 pm.
Shirley Casperson Mar 15, 2013 at 07:23 PM

Forgive the mistakes.

My husband and I are going on the April 10 trip. Anyone else? My question: Will Costa Ricans accept $2 bills from the U.S.
Ed Speegle Mar 09, 2013 at 01:20 PM

$20 bills are the most welcome. You may get change in dollars or colon's. The natives are wary of larger bills. U.S. currency is common and prices are often stated in dollars as well as colon's A wonderful educational trip!

Sally Stelljes Mar 03, 2013 at 11:03 AM

Anyone coming to this program beginning on March 6? We will arrive in San Jose evening of March 5 & stay @Balmoral. Looking forward to meeting participants.
