We just came home from this trip and I must say it was colder than I expected. Iceland is having an unseasonably cold summer this year. The boat rides are very cold. I wish I had taken my REI parka for easier layering. Summer clothes were not necessary except for a swimsuit. It was a great trip, very busy though. The sights, the education the experience was all quite remarkable. Our guide was a bit hard to understand but in the end I think most of us got the information necessary. Kenneth, I am pretty sure we went to the Dettifoss falls. And several falls in canyons. If it is on the West side, we were probably there. It was all spactular. If I had it to do again, I would go in June or July while the Lupins were in bloom. September 1 markes the beginning of winter and things start closing down.

Kenneth: Do consider this trip. It is jam-packed with all sorts of sights. We saw many falls and one canyon that I recall. I didn't keep a journal so the names elude me. Perhaps the folks at RS can put you in touch with one of the guides to clarify. Our guide was excellent. For Diana (below) our group numbered 35. Plenty of room on the bus. Yes, it was cold (we went in August) so don't go later than that. Sweaters and jackets (layering) will be a must. There was always an activity of interest and the learning experiences were great. Our one negative: if you have done whale watching before in warmer climates, don't bother here. Three hours of shivering to see a few spouts wasn't worth it. The museum was far more interesting and could take up your time. The horse farm was a highlight we'll never forget. A great experience all told.

Hi folks - we are seriously considering this trip. For those of you who have been on the trip, does it include the Ásbyrgi Canyon and/or the Dettifoss Falls? Thanks for your help!
Elaine W Sep 07, 2015 at 04:36 PM

We did not visit these falls but we visited Godafoss, Hraunfossar,Gullfoss, and some others that INGA, our guide, wanted to share. This is an excellent trip. The lectures are interesting, the activities varied, and the country is beautiful.
Kate Simpson Sep 09, 2015 at 01:27 PM

I went on this tour last year. We didn't go east of Lake Myvatn, so it wouldn't have been possible to have visited either Ásbyrgi Canyon or the Dettifoss Falls.

How many people are generally on this trip? It looks like the the weather is relatively cold and wet on a daily basis, ya?
Joyce Keay Aug 13, 2015 at 10:22 PM

I don't remember how many people. I went in July and I thought we had excellent weather - maybe one morning with showers. I live in Massachusetts and sunny days felt like crisp October weather. Wear layers and you will be fine.
Elaine W Aug 18, 2015 at 04:19 PM

There are 32 people on this trip (we are still in Iceland) and the weather has not diminished our enjoyment at all. The weather has been unusually cold here this summer. A fleece and rain jacket or windbreaker works. Bring a hat for sure and gloves if your hands get cold because the wind can be quite strong.

Diana Kohler Aug 13, 2015 at 05:46 PM

I am wondering about the daily schedule. What time we leave for the daily activities and what time is breakfast and dinner etc.
Joyce Keay Aug 13, 2015 at 06:18 PM

Hi, I went on this trip two years ago but I think my memory is pretty reliable.Breakfast is buffet style and is available at 8:00 (maybe earlier, depending on the hotel). I think we are asked to be on the bus by 9:00 (maybe 8:30 on some days). Lunch is generally around noon and dinner close to 6:00. Fish is served for most dinners and many lunches. It is very nicely prepared. Even though the weather forecast may not indicate rain, you should take a rain jacket and rain paints for visits to the waterfalls. Have fun! It is a great trip!
Joyce Keay Aug 13, 2015 at 06:20 PM

Oops it was last year. So much for my memory being reliable.
Diana Kohler Aug 13, 2015 at 08:44 PM

Thank you Joyce. I am gluten free and wonder if wheat is a staple or are there enough vegetables and protein available?
Joyce Keay Aug 13, 2015 at 10:25 PM

nI think you can contact Road Scholar and ask this question. I think when you signed up you were given the chance to say if you were on a special diet so you can contact them with your question about being gluten free. As I said before, the protein is almost always fish. I think you can always ask for more.

Looking forward to meeting the Aug.9th group!

Marcia De Fren Jul 08, 2015 at 11:55 AM

Hi - we're taking the August 9 trip. We plan to arrive one day early to acclimate and get rid of jet lag (as best as possible). We'll be at the Northern Lights hotel. Anyone doing same? Let us know. Marcia and Burt

I am enrolled in The Best of Iceland, Aug 9-20, 2015 flying from MSP on Icelandic Air. Anybody else from MN enrolled? Would like to connect.
