See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Samuel Hagner Mar 06, 2013 at 12:02 PM

My name is Sam Hagner, and I will be attending the Great Smoky Mt. Railway adventure on May 12, 2013. I am flying into the Chattanooga airport at 12:52 PM on that date, Delta, from where I will take a limo to Hiawassee, Ga., ("Affordable Taxi"), a 3 hour trip, and would like people to join me in sharing the expense of $184 for 1-4 persons, plus $15 for additional passengers.
My address: 123 Madbury Road, Durham, N.H. 03824, and e-mail: bwackr@comcast.net.
Thank you.

how sturdy a hiking shoe does anyone recommend? Tennis shoe, jogging shoe, hiking boot?
Sue Brown Oct 19, 2012 at 09:18 AM

hi mary, Not having been on this trip before I can only tell you what I just bought as , from previous reports this walking / hiking is moderate with some incline. the local sports store recommended Merrill shoes (look like walking sneakers but when worn I have found them to b absolutely wonderful for walking. they are very light weight, low ankled, hard, non giving sole which makes walking absolutely effortless on the knees and legs while having a foam cushion inside). I love them. hope that helps.

Oct 21 -26th session participants: I live near Atlanta Airport and could give a ride to Hiawassee to 3 people if you need it

Josephine Satloff Oct 01, 2012 at 09:35 PM

To Sue Brown: I see that I forgot to say that I'll be with the Oct 7-12 group. I'm sorry I won't get to meet you. Maybe we can compare notes later? I've been to Costa Rica and Montreal & Quebec City with Elderhostel/Road Scholar. I had mixed feelings about the Quebec tour, but the Costa Rican tour focused on nature and was fabulous.
I'll look for posts from others who'll be in Hiawassee October 7.
Sue Brown Oct 01, 2012 at 09:43 PM

thanks for the quick reply. I'll look forward to read about your adventure. Please post .
Sue Brown Oct 01, 2012 at 09:43 PM

thanks again.

I will be attending my FIRST RS trip Oct 21-30 and am excitedly looking forward to this new venture ! Anyone else attending that week, I would love to hear from you.

Josephine Satloff Sep 23, 2012 at 10:44 AM

I am driving from Salisbury, MD, arriving at Ridge Resort sometime before the 4 PM check-in. I've never been inland in that area and am driving alone so I'm taking plenty of time, with two nights on the way. I am excited about the program and the drive there and back!
Sue Brown Oct 01, 2012 at 07:41 PM

Hi Josephine, This will be my FIRST RS trip and I am truly excited about it. I actually live abt 2 hrs away from the resort (Newnan, GA) and will be driving up before the 4 pm check-in. You soud like MY kind of driver - I did the same this past summer taking 4 days to get up to NYS. Love driving no more than 250-300 miles a day, arriving whereever early each day with time to wander. The process of getting to the major destinations were as enjoyable as the ultimate destination. Have you been on these trips before ??
Sue Brown Oct 01, 2012 at 07:42 PM

oops ! hit the wrong button ;-).
Sue Brown Oct 01, 2012 at 07:44 PM

O dear, I think I assumed you were going to the same week as I. I guess I am learning about how this works, and that it includes all trips . (mine is the last week of October)
Sue Brown Oct 01, 2012 at 08:42 PM

Oct 21-26.

Robert Shaw Sep 09, 2012 at 08:48 PM

We are arriving at Hiawassee on Sunday Oct 7 for the Oct 7-11 week. We are driving up from Atlanta. The group of friends we are meeting for this Appalachian experience all lived in Potsdam, New York in the 1960's and 1970's and we have all spent many hours & hikes and swimming and camping in the Adirondack Mountains --so we are excited that Lee Knight grew up in the Adirondacks! Please tell him. Maybe he can email us, so we can talk further?
