14 Days | 13 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

I am attending this program on March 20th and am looking for other participants, particularly coming from Houston, TX

I am going to New Zealand March 6th. What is the best way to get currency? The information mentions the airpot or a city bank. I know we will be picked up at the airport. Suggestions? I will have a credit card. Amount of "cash" needed?
Nancy Smith Feb 21, 2015 at 07:18 AM

First, check with your bank to let them know you will be going so that you can use your ATM card. Some banks put a block on use if it is international and they don't know you are going (to safeguard against fraud; it protects you). Then when you get to the airport, check with the man who picks you up (John was our guide, but I don't know that he does every Roads Scholar tour). He or the local NZ rep will suggest one or two banks to use. Don't just use the first bank you see although that may be the one they suggest. I would like to say that Bank of New Zealand or Bank of Auckland are the ones they suggest, but it's been over a year and I don't remember exactly. Whatever bank they suggest is found throughout New Zealand so you can repeat the process at the various places you stay (except for one...I think they didn't have a branch at one of the places on the South Island. I hope this helps. As I said, don't randomly choose. Ask the tour guides; they are the local experts and won't steer you wrong. Have a wonderful trip. I am sure you will based on our experience. We went to New Zealand last Oct/Nov. The weather was still fairly cool with lots of wind. I don't remember anyone dressing up at all for any of the activities. Pants, jackets, layers, etc. It was an amazing trip, hope you enjoy it.

Anne Lowry Jan 19, 2015 at 06:02 PM

The suggested packing list for this trip includes clothing "suitable for dress occasions." Can anyone tell me how dressy we need to be? Thanks.
Alice Wittmann Jan 22, 2015 at 02:22 PM

In my experience "dressy casual" is usually fine. I think New Zealand is pretty casual in all. Maybe a Chico's travel pant outfit would be suitable or a long skirt and top. Just thoughts off the top of my head.
Alice Wittmann Jan 22, 2015 at 02:23 PM

Anne - when are you going? We are on the May 14 - 26 trip.
Anne Lowry Jan 22, 2015 at 03:50 PM

I am going March 20 - April 1, so will not get to meet you, at least on this trip. Thanks for the suggestion re:dress.
Marie Zelitch Mar 02, 2015 at 12:16 AM

Anne , maybe we can wear a nice top with black jeans?

Alice Wittmann Jan 11, 2015 at 10:17 AM

We are signed up for the May 14 - 26 program and would like to also visit Australia while we are in that part of the world. Does anyone have any suggestions for an Australian add on either before or after the dates of this NZ program?
Jane Jan 14, 2015 at 11:00 AM

There is an Odyssey Down Under trip that combines both Australia and New Zealand. I would contact Road Scholar or look at the trips listed for Australia to find it.

Does any one know who will be the leaders on the 1/3/15 trip?

Chris Lund Dec 06, 2014 at 09:42 PM

I am a woman who will be traveling solo on this trip. Had a "potluck" roomie on Scotland trip that was a great experience, but would be open to hearing from anyone looking for a roommate. Chris Lund

I am interested in the June trip. Does anyone know how soon I would need to sign up? I have never been on a RS trip before.
