Susan Crippen Sep 12, 2014 at 09:33 PM

Hello to fellow hikers! I'd like to introduce us, Gordon and Susan Crippen from Anacortes, WA doing the December NZ hiking trip. We hike the North Cascades in the summer and are definitely looking forward to the December trip.

My name is Pat and i live in Montana. I will be on the 2014 Hiking Under Southern Skies trip and I would like to meet other participants in the program.. I would like to extend my stay for a few days but need some ideas. Is anyone thinking of doing the same?. I would like to walk the Milford Track but would this be similar terrain and scenery as the program? Looking forward to NZ and some energetic hiking.

Bill Zoske, my husband, suggested that it would be a good idea to have a course of TamiFlu or similar medication, along on the trip because of the bad flu season and the fact that travel makes it much more likely to encounter flu. Others may want to get a prescription before they leave home.

Hi, again, Linda. It's funny, I got an email notification of both your messages, I don't know why it didn't work that way for you.
I hope other people jump in to this discussion, but my impression is that New Zealand is not a formal place where you'd be expected to wear only pastels in the summer, nor do I think it's going to be really warm during the time we're not hiking--but bear in mind I am saying that from a Florida perspective. I guess it makes sense to take some layers for non-hiking as well as hiking activities, but I would not restrict items on the basis of pastel versus other colors.

If anyone else is thinking of posting, I'll repeat my initial message--I'd love to see if anyone else is interested in a pricey but probably unforgettable helicopter trip to the fiords on our free afternoon Feb. 12.
Our trip is really coming up soon, now. Looking forward to meeting everybody.

I didn't see your initial post but was on a Road Scholar trip to New Zealand last Feb. and can tell you that it is indeed not formal or pastel. I didn't hike and I'm speaking from a south Texas perspective but it is not particularly warm. Layering is always excellent advice. For normal walking I wore long pants, light weight shirts but also had sweaters, jackets. I bought a possum vest while I was there and wore it. The possum garments are wonderful. Be sure to save money for something. Wonderful country!

Hi, Linda, thanks for responding. I didn’t know till I got your email whether any responses would come to my email, or whether I’d have to go back to the discussion board to see if there were responses.

Hope you have a good winter, with whatever amount of snow you consider optimal. I grew up in Cleveland, and my husband in Rochester, NY, so we know about winter, but we’ve been in the South for many years. We usually look for trips in the summer, to get away from the beastly weather here. Last year the Road Scholar hiking trip to Switzerland in August was wonderful. But, I’ve wanted to go to New Zealand for decades, so we’ll do it even if it’s not a good season for us.

Enjoy your time at the Getty. I was there a few years ago, and it is really an interesting place. It has a very different feel from East Coast museums.

Thanks for responding. Best holiday wishes,

Gloria

I did not see your response until I actually got back on the discussion board, no e-mail notification, which certainly cuts down the board's usefulness. Thanks for writing. Now that the trip is getting closer, I'm beginning to wonder about clothing. I know it will be summer in New Zealand, but wonder what to wear when we aren't hiking. Light colors, sandals, shorts/capris? Or is it more sneakers, lightweight pants, any colors? If you know or if anyone else does if this is public, please respond. Thanks.

I'm Gloria Einstein from Jacksonville, Florida. My husband, Bill Zoske, and I are planning on being part of the Hiking under Southern Skies trip, and we're looking forward to it a lot. For me, seeing New Zealand has been a very long-term goal. The itinerary looks wonderful, but we do not get to see Milford Sound and the fiords. I'm sure there is a very good practical reason for this, but it made me look into whether there was a possibility of a side trip on our free afternoon, February 12. The good news: Fiordland Helicopters can pick us up near our Glenorchy Lodge and is licensed to land all over Fiordland National Park. Check it out at www.fiordlandhelicopters.co.nz
The not so good news, it is expensive, they responded $3,000-6,000, depending on how much of Fiordlands we want to see. That would be the price for 4 people. They also have regular 1 hour flights for $550 or thereabouts, if we could get to their headquarters at Te Anau, and I don't know what it would cost to get there.

I don't know if anyone's interested. It's a lot of money, but it sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime addition to a once-in-a-lifetime trip. So, let me know if anyone would like to pursue this.
Looking forward to meeting each of you.
Gloria Einstein
