Just contacted my mobile phone carrier - T-Mobile, and they said calls from Canada are not very expensive, but the data charges (emails) are horrendous.. Just a reminder to make provisions (as in shut off data incoming while out of the country)..

Judi and I are looking forward to having yet another enjoyable Road Scholar trip with the 8/22/13 group.

Can anyone suggest a way to use wireless services without incurring large roaming fees? We have a New York City based unlocked iPhone and iPad with AT&T. We plan to make phone calls within Canada and from Canada to the US and to utilize data for mapping and gathering information along the way.

Thank you, JIM jim144@earthlink.net

Sherry Cimino Aug 14, 2013 at 06:04 PM

WOW - what a great idea.. Never thought about it, but I certainly will now..

I am bringing a AAA map of BC and have done a little beforehand research on restaurants we might need to know for "Dinner on your own". It's easier for me to do this on a computer than on an i pad or i phone.
Ed Prior Dec 22, 2013 at 05:36 PM

I don't know about iPhones, but to use an unlocked phone you could buy a SIM card in Canada. I've used 7-11 phones with good success (see www.speakout7eleven.ca).

By the way, we're Canadians (Victoria, BC) contemplating making this our first Road Scholar trip, probably in June

I will be taking the Sept 12 trip. Might anyone be interested in taking the ferry to Victoria Island on Sat. Sept 21?
Sherry Cimino Aug 14, 2013 at 06:01 PM

Hi Carmel,, Charlie and Sherry Cimino are going on the Sept 12th trip and can't wait.. And I am very interested in getting over to Victoria Island and spending the day at "The Garden".. Am so excited to finally be going on this trip. Have wanted to for YEARS...
Carmel Mullally-Powers Aug 19, 2013 at 12:16 PM

Sherry: There are several ways to do this, ferry or coach. My main reason is to see the Gardens also. I am very easy as to how we do it. You can check on line on how to get to Victoria Island from Vancouver. Perhaps the hotel we are staying at will have a concierge?
Sherry Cimino Aug 19, 2013 at 07:28 PM

Hopefully, it will be good weather.. I bet RS can help us make the arrangements too.. I am sure we are not the first to want to get over there..
Carmel Mullally-Powers Aug 22, 2013 at 08:43 PM

Sherry: If yu like we could either take the Ferry one way and travel by coach, bus or other road transport. I believe it is possible to get a group rate if there are at least 5 people in a van. Since time will be limited perhaps the most efficient way would be best, as we do want to see something when we arrive. Just dress in layers, I am travelling from Illinois, St.Charles, West of Chicago.
Sherry Cimino Aug 30, 2013 at 07:16 PM

Sounds good to us, Carmel,, whatever works.. We will be getting to the first dinner a bit late on the 12th,, but we will be there from Las Vegas, can't wait

Judith Sether Jul 11, 2013 at 11:52 AM

Greetings Fellow Travelers...I am doing the Rockies by Rail beginning on August 22. I have decided to fly into Calgary a day early, so will be arriving on Wednesday the 21. Is anyone else coming in early who would be interested in some sightseeing in the area prior to the orientation dinner? My email is jvillagelady@aol.com. Looking forward to meeting you all. Judy
