Charles Chromow Oct 01, 2015 at 06:43 PM

My name is Charles Chromow. I am going solo on the Kenya-Tanzania trip from October 5-19. I understand we have a full 6 travelers. I would like to make contact with other travelers through this site if that is possible. If you identiy yourself, perhaps we can exchange emails and get to know each other a bit.

Ann Moffat Sep 22, 2015 at 11:04 AM

Just got back from the trip, 9/7 - 9/21. Wonderful, if a bit dusty as we were traveling at the end of the dry season. No problems with bugs so we had WAY more repellent than we ever used. Sunscreen is a must! All site have laundry available for very reasonable prices. If you take cash (a very good idea) it should be in $1, $5, or $10 bills at the most. All places we went took US currency although you may pay slightly higher prices that way. ($4 vs 300 KS for a drink). The exchange rate is ~ 100 KS to $1. Have extra camera batteries so you can charge one while using the other. Make sure you have the correct adapters for each country. Generators are only on certain hours of the day so plan ahead.
All in all, it was a WONDERFUL trip. Philip Ketter is amazing. He knows everything about the animals, birds, plants, people & history of the countries. He also seems to know someone everywhere we went.

What are the correct adapters? I looked online and am confused. It needs to reduce from 220 to 120? ¿¿

I am 76 years old and I am told that I should not have the Yellow Fever vaccine. Has anyone had the experience of being denied entrance to Tanzania because of having only the waiver? Has anyone had to be vaccinated at the border in order to enter Tanzania despite having a waiver? Thanks, Pat Shapiro

I'm leaving for Kenya Aug.19th from Washington Dulles. I'm still trying to locate anyone on the same tour.

Michele Brandenburg Aug 14, 2015 at 03:50 PM

There is valet laundry service at some of the camps for a reasonable fee. You can do some laundry by hand when staying more than one night in the same place so time to dry. These options allow
you to fit enough clothes in one suitcase.

I'm all signed up for the January 25th 2016 trip. Anyone else signed up for this trip?
Peter Randazzo Aug 14, 2015 at 03:40 PM

Hi Beth, My wife, Donna, and I are on this trip. We fly out of New York (JFK) on British Airways to London. We then transfer to a flight to Nairobi. We are both looking forward to this. We've been on many Road Scholar trips and find them to be fantastic. Hoping that this one will be as good for better than all the rest.
Beth Mariluch Aug 19, 2015 at 09:36 PM

Hi Peter. I am also flying from JFK to Heathrow. Although, I'll be starting in San Francisco. This is my first trip with Road Scholar and my first trip outside of North America. I'm very excited!
Peter Randazzo Aug 20, 2015 at 05:22 AM

Hi Beth. I think you'll be quite pleased with Road Scholar. I've been on over 30 RS adventures and my wife has been on about a dozen. We've loved them all. As we get closer to the date, they will send you some luggage tags, one for your checked luggage and one for your carryon. It's an easy way to spot fellow travelers. So, let's look for each other at JFK.
Beth Mariluch Aug 20, 2015 at 11:16 AM

Sounds great. See you soon!

Donna Rupp Aug 13, 2015 at 05:24 PM

Is there anyone out there traveling September 14-28? Or do I have the whole place to myself? Hope not.
Pamela Johnson Aug 14, 2015 at 03:52 PM

Deb, I'm going on the 8/31-9/14 trip. I'm 67 and did not have any problem with the yellow fever shot. It was recommended by the CDC.
Peter Sylvester Aug 14, 2015 at 05:00 PM

Pamela, I had a serious talk with my doctor. She and the CDC said the odds of contracting Yellow Fever are slim. There is a place for medical contraindications on the "international Certificate . . " . The doctor wrote I was allergic to eggs. I hope this is helpful. Oh, UNC Health Care had a waiting list, check you health service.

MARK SARO Aug 13, 2015 at 03:50 PM

My wife and I are traveling with another couple on the 9/28-10/12 trip. We are trying to get in touch with anyone who is also on this trip to introduce ourselves ahead of time. This is our first Road Scholar adventure, we are all in our late 50's or early 60's, and are from Colorado, US. We look forward to hearing from you.
Deb Gaither Aug 14, 2015 at 12:48 PM

I'm traveling solo on this trip. It will be my 3rd. Went solo to Costa Rica last September with wonderful fellow travelers. I went for the yellow fever vaccine yesterday but got a certificate from doctor that at age 65 the benefits outweighed the risk of the shot. But I did get 4 others. Yeow! I've sent off for visa. Now fthinking of how to pack 2 weeks' stuff in 1 duffel.
Deb Gaither Aug 14, 2015 at 12:52 PM

I meant the risk of yellow fever shot outweighed benefit.
MARK SARO Aug 14, 2015 at 01:38 PM

What were the other 4 shots?
Deb Gaither Aug 14, 2015 at 01:54 PM

I went to the travel clinic at local hospital. Got Hepatitis A, polio booster,
Deb Gaither Aug 14, 2015 at 01:56 PM

Meningitis, & typhoid. Already had the DPT (diptheria, pertussus, tetanus).
