Not new, but I got "The Longest Day" from Netflix and watched it before I went. It was quite close to the book "D-Day" by Stephen Ambrose.

D-Day's Sunken Secrets. This program was recently shown on PBS. It is well worth watching if it airs again.

I have a chip card through Bank of America and they do not charge foreign transaction fees. We have used it on several trips to Europe. I attended this trip last year and there were around 30-35 of the nicest people ever on the trip! Right, Pam??

Laurie Travers Jul 19, 2014 at 07:57 PM

Thanks to all for the useful information. We'd never heard of "chip and pin," but will check it out. We are enrolled in the Sept. 14-27 trip. Do you have any idea how many people will be in our group? We're from Boulder, Colorado

I just learned about chip and pin, which is the credit card technology used in most of Europe. There is a chip embedded in the card. Supposed to be more secure. Laurie and Art, we'll look forward to meeting you. I think about 34 are on our trip. We're from Pittsburgh. Linda and Dan Haller

I just ordered a chip and pin card from USAA., but that card charges 1% foreign fees. Our Capitol One. Card charges no fees, but does not do chip and pin yet. So we will take both cards and use the no fee one when accepted. Our Delta Am Express card will come in chip and pin if you ask, and also charges no foreign fees now. But I read Am Express isn't as widely accepted in Europe, so we won't bother with it.

In Florence, Italy, June 19-26 we found 'firms' took either Mastercard or Visa. Our cards do not yet have the chip-pin characteristics. We also found places that would take CASH only. Our bank ATM card is chip-less. We had no trouble with it.

More on credit cards- Came across this article (“Traveling in Europe? Get chip-and-PIN credit card”) in the July 13 2014 Seattle Times: http://seattletimes.com/html/travel/2024031479_chipandpintravelwiseelliottxml.html
Don’t know anything about Christopher Elliott but liked the explanation of what a “chip-and-pin” card is and his recommendations for cards.

My husband and I were on this tour last Sept. and thoroughly enjoyed it. We also saw the Tom Brokaw D-Day movie. It has footage from lots of the places you will visit. The St. Lo photos and footage were especially good. You will see the hedgerows, too, which is something many of the other company tours don't do. Also Eisenhower's field headquarters, which I have never seen mentioned in other tours. Have a wonderful time! The others in our group were fabulous traveling companions.

Imax D-Day Film Recco: Earlier this month, I saw the new 45-minute Imax D-Day film narrated by Tom Brokaw (http://en.dday-normandy1944.com/D-Day-normandy-1944-the-film/home-2.html). I was very impressed and highly recommend it.

Thank you for the very informative posts! We are considering going off the grid for our trip as all the connectivity.
Linda Haller Jul 10, 2014 at 10:43 AM

seems rather complicated.
Linda Haller Jul 10, 2014 at 10:47 AM

On our Sept 14 departure, all the arrangements are different from those mentioned in previous posts-Olivier is not the leader (we don't know who is), the hotels are different, even a different town in Normandy, and the ship is a different one in the same line. We are hoping our experience is as positive as others have reported. Has anyone out there had another tour leader? The only one I've ever seen mentioned is Olivier.
Pam Harrington Jul 10, 2014 at 03:16 PM

Linda, the Botticelli (sp?) is a sister ship to the France, so I would assume it will have the same amenities that the France does, and that it will be a lovely ship.
