I have discovered a way around the cell phone problem in Australia and NZ. Download the Messenger app. It's through facebook but is free and downloadable online. It works with android and iphone both. The beauty of it is it is internet operational so all you need is to set your phone on the wi fi or hot spot setting. It's similar to skype or whats up app. I've been using the Messenger app to text my daughters Nancy from MI (Feb 1 trip) I'm packed, are you?? Don't forget your Australian/NZ electrical adapters!

Just finnished hiking in Glacier National Park and several Utah parks and am now looking forward to the Feb 1- 22 New Zealand trip. Any suggestions on cell phone coverage and providers for those who have done this??

My partner and I are very fit, long-time hikers and non-technical climbers (Maine "mountains"--steep but not very high). But, we are no longer young--68 and 72. Just how "challenging" is challenging? --

Hi, My name is Ernie Witzke, I'm from Wisconsin. This will be my second trip to New Zealand. My wife and I did the same trip five years ago. We enjoyed it immensely and talked about doing it again. She recently passed away so I'll be traveling on my own. What we enjoyed last time was the food, the informality, the geology, the friendliness of the people, and the diversity of the wildlife. We were hiking clothes all the time.

Hope to see you all there.

Hi, Susan. I'm looking forward to meeting you and the other hikers in a few weeks. I live in Edmonton, Canada and walk and cross-country ski in our beautiful river valley regularly. I hike in The Rockies as often as I can. We should have quite a variety of hiking on our trip.See you soon!

Susan Crippen Sep 12, 2014 at 09:33 PM

Hello to fellow hikers! I'd like to introduce us, Gordon and Susan Crippen from Anacortes, WA doing the December NZ hiking trip. We hike the North Cascades in the summer and are definitely looking forward to the December trip.

My name is Pat and i live in Montana. I will be on the 2014 Hiking Under Southern Skies trip and I would like to meet other participants in the program.. I would like to extend my stay for a few days but need some ideas. Is anyone thinking of doing the same?. I would like to walk the Milford Track but would this be similar terrain and scenery as the program? Looking forward to NZ and some energetic hiking.

Bill Zoske, my husband, suggested that it would be a good idea to have a course of TamiFlu or similar medication, along on the trip because of the bad flu season and the fact that travel makes it much more likely to encounter flu. Others may want to get a prescription before they leave home.
