Anyone else out there that's going on the August 20 tour. And any advice from any who have already been?
Ilene Ringler Aug 07, 2014 at 07:14 PM

hi we are on the trip as well. looking forward to meeting you

Michael Fischer Jul 09, 2014 at 04:59 PM

Does anyone have any suggestions on types and brands and models of binoculars to take?

Susan Sumeri Jun 09, 2014 at 03:34 PM

I finished Mandela's "A long Walk to Freedom", the book. For anyone that doesn't have the time to read it - it's long -, read Stengel's "Fifteen Lessons on Life, Love, and Courage". The 15 chapters are digests of parts of "long Walk". It gives you a feel for Mandela's life. I also have Frommer's "South Africa", pretty good and National Geographic's "South Africa" - not worth the money. One reason Alex and I chose this trip plus extension were the two safaris - we loved our time in Kenya and Tanzania.

Irene and I are still signed up and looking forward to it. I've started on the reading list as well. Katie Payne's book on elephants is fascinating and I'm learning lots and lot from Mandela's autobiography. And while the book Scramble for Africa was a long and involved read, it also provided valuable information about history. I'll have a couple of the field guides with me on the trip and do share.

Mt husband Alex and I are registered for this trip and the extension leaving August 20. Anyone else?

Gail Buckley Mar 09, 2014 at 03:05 PM

There were just 10 of us on the Feb 2014 trip. One of the best and our leader, Franz, was great. Everything from the shanty towns of Joburg to the safari were worth seeing. Wait till you see the ostrich chicks pecking through their shell. Loved the penquins, the Elephant sanctuary, everything. On th safari part,we did see the big 5. remember it isn't a zoo so there is no guarantee of what you will view but our group was really lucky.
Ilene Ringler Aug 07, 2014 at 07:12 PM

hi a small question. did you bring hiking shoes or do you think sturdy sneakers are OK?
Gail Buckley Aug 07, 2014 at 10:31 PM

No need for hiking shoes. Any comfortable walking shoes are fine. There isn't really much walking at all.
Ilene Ringler Aug 10, 2014 at 02:19 PM

thanks, very helpful when we have packing constraints.

Susan Sumeri Mar 05, 2014 at 02:17 PM

Michael, Have you checked with Road scholar. The hotels probably aren't a problem but you want to be sure about when we are in the nature parks.

Michael Fischer Mar 05, 2014 at 06:52 AM

My partner uses a CPAP machine and thus needs electricity next to her bed for the night. (The machine is dual voltage and we will have the appropriate plug adapters so this is not a problem). Does anyone know whether there are places on the trip (and the Victoria Falls extension) where there might be a problem having electricity next to the bed?
