I recommend Huw Strachan's survey called The First World War.
Judith Powers Jul 10, 2014 at 04:51 PM

I liked this too.

Looking for good fiction set at the time of WW1? Here are some books I enjoyed: 1. Ken Follett, The CEntury trilogy, Book 1; Pat Barker, Renaissance trilogy--I enjoyed all three books; and BIRDS WITHOUT WINGS. I've forgotten the author, but the book is set in a Turkish village and shows what happens to a peaceful village when nationalism rears its head. Ataturk appears periodically. And oh yes, ONCE AN EAGLE by Myrer is a great read. Ruth Weber

I hope I finish at one of these before the conference. such great and varied suggestions! Thanks.

I'm Ruth Weber. Is anyone else from Minnesota going on thiss program? If you are, I'd love to hear from you. We could meet at the airport--it's nice to have someone to talk to during the long waits.

3 small novels which give a glimpse of the lives of the effect of the war on peoples' lives: Wilfred and Eileen by Jonathan Smith, Julian Grenfell by Nicholas Moseley and William an Englishman
by Cicely Hamilton.
by Cicely Hamilton. I bought them through Persephone Books but they are also on Amazon.

Hi I am from Scotts Valley, Ca near San Jose.
I just booked my flight to London and plan to arrive a day early. I would like to stay after the trip to see more of London and possibly Scotland. Is anyone else interested in joining me?
Rae Walker May 01, 2014 at 09:58 PM

I have booked my flight on New Zealand Air for a different take on Europe flights. I have a friend in England that I hope to introduce to others if she makes it down to Oxford. I can't stay extra, but there is always more opportunities!
Rae Walker May 01, 2014 at 10:00 PM

Rae Walker Apr 04, 2014 at 11:50 PM

Is anyone on this trip from the west coast? I'm from LA and will be arranging my own flight to London.Has anyone booked their flight yet?
Paula Moorad Apr 08, 2014 at 02:18 PM

Rae, I am flying from Phoenix. Really looking forward to it too! Paula
Rae Walker Apr 08, 2014 at 10:44 PM

Paula-are you reading any books or have any favorites? I am going one day early and staying at a B+B in Wheatley, just outside Oxford. Have you looked into transportation to Oxford since you are arranging your own flight?

Rae Walker Mar 30, 2014 at 11:35 PM

I am really looking forward to this trip as well.I loved reading all quiet on the western from and now I'm reading a non_fiction by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle that speaks briefly about the start of WWI and the French/Belgian Front. Looking forward to meeting new people and hearing their stories. I will try Peter Englund's book too. Rae
