Husband and I are going on Aug. 13 trip. Leaving one day early from SeaTac. Anyone else from Seattle area going?

Gail Fisher Jun 17, 2015 at 04:16 PM

Interested in the Jan-Feb 2016 trip but would like to have a female roommate if anybody is considering this trip.
Gail Fisher Jun 23, 2015 at 01:04 PM

Changing this due to the advice of others - looking at March now - really wanting a roommate if possible!

Marjorie Larragoite May 27, 2015 at 12:48 PM

I didn't take or need binoculars.

Ellin Ifft May 26, 2015 at 04:06 PM

RS suggests binoculars - did anyone wish they had them or use them a lot? I hate adding any extra weight and didn't use them on other trips. I never seemed to have them handy
Russell Green May 26, 2015 at 05:19 PM

only a few people had them that I saw. I agree that less to carry is better.

Ellin Ifft Apr 26, 2015 at 03:16 PM

Thanks you all for the great information on school donations. I'll plan on a monetary donation because the teachers will know best where it is needed but will bring some easily packable supplies.

Karen Fisher Apr 25, 2015 at 04:35 PM

I would respectfully suggest that cash donations are best because the local teachers and administrators can pick out the appropriate supplies and enough for each student. On our visit the supplies included juice boxes for each child, which was nice too. The children sang a song for us and we sang "If you're happy and you know it..." for them. It was a touching and lovely time. Enjoy your trip, I certainly did.

In response to Ellin,
On the trip I was on, we also had the opportunity to contribute cash directly to Road Scholar to be used to buy things for the elementary school we visited. Our group contributed enough that they were able to buy a music player (some sort of electrical device) and music to play for the children. For those who don't want to carry an extra suitcase, just bring cash and an open heart.

I noticed donations are appreciated at the elementary school we visit. I'm a retired teacher and I know how basic some of these schools are and how much just basic school supplied are needed and appreciated. I plan on bringing as much as will fit in my suitcase. I'm urging (actually nagging) those of you inclined to give donations not to overlook this opportunity to help out.
Sharon H Apr 24, 2015 at 06:36 PM

I, too, am a retired teacher, and I took school supplies along, which didn't really take that much space when laid flat. It thengave me space on our return home for things we bought while on the trip. My husband also donated cash, for the school we vii
Sharon H Apr 24, 2015 at 06:37 PM

Oops! The school we visited was quite needy, and we were moved to give more than basic supplies.
