I am thinking of staying in the area for a few days after this program. I would be glad to have company and am open to suggestions as to what to see and/or do.

There are a myriad of things to do in the Finger Lakes Region. I live in the area and can give some suggestions of some of my favorites. You will be doing the program just beofe Glass Fest in Corning. Check out www.glassfest.org. I'm going for the weekend with a friend. Ithaca is my favorite place because I live there. If you like to gardens and arboretums there is Cornell Plantations, next to Cornell University (a beautiful campus). Check out www.cornellplantations.org. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is a great place to walk and view birds. There is other information at www.visitithaca.com and www.fingerlakeswinecountry.com. Another town in the area is Canandaigua with the NY Wine and Culinary Center (www.nywcc.com), nice shops and restaurants, and Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion (www.sonnenberg.org). The list is endless! You will surely want to plan another Road Scholar trip to the area. Enjoy the program. I'm looking forward to taking it in late May.

Sorry, It's "www.visitithaca.com"

I am going on this trip May 17th. I am driving from Charlotte, NC. Does anyone want to carpool?

Champa Bilwakesh Mar 17, 2015 at 11:10 AM

Hello. My husband and i are going on this trip starting May 17th. would love to meet anyone else on the same trip. we are not experienced hikers and wondering what experience other have had on this if they have been on this hike before. looking forward to our trip!
Barb Zusan Mar 17, 2015 at 07:27 PM

I did this trip in October. The scenery was stunning, and the trip was well-run. Hiking was a bit strenuous, but everyone in our group (ages 50s-upper 70s) handled it just fine. You'll be going down a lot of stairs, but up only a little bit. Good hiking shoes, preferably high-top, are a must, and I storngly recommend bringing your own hiking poles. Enjoy!

I have done several hiking trips with Road Scholar. They have all been good.

Hi Ester,
I saw your message but am having trouble replying to it. Perhaps this will work.
I think the info about small ships and trains comes from your profile interests.
Are you and your Akron friends going to the May 31-June 5 program? Joyce
Esther DeTray Mar 14, 2015 at 02:45 PM

Yes we are Joyce.

Joyce White Jan 15, 2015 at 03:36 PM

Hi Ester,
This is my third try...maybe this will work. When are you doing the hiking program? I'm doing May 31-June 5. I live locally (Ithaca) and am doing the program with Anne Melvin, one of my roommates from the Road Scholar French Immersion program at the University of Quebec at Trois Rivieres. We would take an early morning walk nearly every day before breakfast and both enjoy hiking. I wanted to share the beautiful Finger Lakes area with Anne and this program fit the bill.
Have you done any other Road Scholar (or other group) hiking trips? Joyce White
Esther DeTray Jan 15, 2015 at 04:36 PM

Joyce, I responded on the RS social site.

Esther DeTray Jan 15, 2015 at 12:56 PM

I was looking for a message from Joyce White but I do not see it here.
Joyce White Jan 15, 2015 at 03:30 PM

Hi Ester,

Two of us will be attending the Oct 19-24 Finger Lakes trip, flying from Minnesota on Oct 18. We'd like to spend the first night in/around Corning and travel to the program on Oct 19. Would like to hitch a ride from Corning if possible. Thanks.
Pat Oberle Jun 14, 2014 at 04:00 PM

I attended this program last year. It is great hiking. Cony
Pat Oberle Jun 14, 2014 at 04:01 PM

Contact the program coordinator. She may pick you up.
