Did anyone ride the elephants in India -- I'm in a moral dilemma, not knowing if the animals are treated kindly. Can someone give me some information? Thanks.

Diana--we did not get to ride the elephants as we arrived in the afternoon and they only work mornings (they are not overworked at all). we did tour the "elephants' city" where they have nice housing and their own private lake for swimming. I had never before (nor since) seen a private swimming place just for elephants, so I took a picture of the sign which read "This lake is for elephants only. No human beings are allowed to swim in this lake." --an unusual photo souvenir. there were several elephants in the lake when we were there, mostly swimming underwater with their trunks out for breathing. I think the elephants are treated pretty well.--Sandie (first group)
