I wondered if anyone going on the February 20th trip to India was leaving from Ohare Airport in Chicago. It would be fun to connect.

mark wiger Jan 20, 2015 at 02:32 PM

Preparing for the program begining January 31, 2015 I would like to use my cell phone with a sim card purchased in Delhi. It sounds like I need to provide documentation and there may be several days turn around time to complete the process. Has anyone had experience with this? Is it possible for Road Scholar (or perhaps the Delhi hotel) to assist allowing me to get a head start on the application process?

There are four times when we have a home-hosted meal. Should we bring hostess gifts (as is done in OAT and GCT)?
Mary Ellen Lyons Jan 14, 2015 at 03:20 PM

Gifts are not expected at all, yet if you care to bring I am sure they would be graciously received by the hostess.
Ignazio Macaluso Jan 14, 2015 at 04:28 PM

Yes, as Mary explained, you can bring them a gift if you want to, but it is not expected and please don't feel obligated.

I'm signed up for the Feb 5 trip and am looking for a room mate. If I don't find someone, I assume that RS will just assign someone?

This is my first Road Scholar trip and my first time to India.

Linda D Jan 06, 2015 at 04:19 PM

RS is very good about locating a roommate if you indicated that you would like one (and roommate matching is available on this trip). If you signed up as a "single" they will not look for a match and you have to pay the additional cost of a single. So call and tell them you want a roommate!

My first Road Scholar trip, and first time in India.Looking forward to meeting so many seasoned travelers. I'm a single (gay) senior, would be happy to have a compatible room-mate. Interested in learning more about modern Indian life as well as sightseeing.
Are shorts appropriate in some situations? Hoping to buy some lightweight clothing there.
Flying in from New Mexico to New York, looking forward to meeting you all.

Check with your Doc. We had a Polio booster, typhoid and malaria pills.

We would appreciate suggestions on sightseeing for up to five days in Delhi before the March 15-April 4, 2015 Best of India program starts. We have only been to Mumbai & Cochin in India before during a cruise. We would probably be more interested in touring places during the day and be back at our hotel by dinner. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Georgeann, My wife and I went on this trip last February, arriving in New Delhi before the start of the official program, when we spent our time visiting the following (listed in order of our preference): Humayuns Tomb; Qutub Minar; Gurdwara Bangla Sahib (Sikh Temple); Chhatarpur Temple. The first two sites have historic significance. During the time we were on our own, we rented a car with a driver from Savari Rental. We found this car rental company by doing a Google search. We found the car rental arrangement to be quite good and was a cheaper option than rental thru the hotel. We made the car rental arrangements on the web before we left home. We had made a recommendation to Roads Scholar that they incorporate Humayauns Tomb and Qutub Minar as part of their program, and it could easily be done during the one free afternoon they had then allowed in the scheduled time in New Delhi. Apparently they have chosen not to take up our recommendation. You could also check out Trip Advisor for tourist attractions in New Delhi. I am sure they will have additional suggestions for you. Good luck on your trip. I am sure you will enjoy it, as we did. Medi & Suzanne Jiwani

We are taking the Feb. 5-25, 2015, North to South India trip. I will appreciate any advice a previous participant about what kind of attire is appropriate for February travel -- jacket, scarf for women, type of shoes, skirts or slacks for women?????
Rhoda Draws Dec 01, 2014 at 11:35 PM

I took the trip in March-Feb. of this year. Light jacket and a scarf fine for the north, You'll need loose cotton tops and shorts or "pajama" pants for the South...pretty hot and humid. I bought a loose cotton blouse and custom-made "pajama" pants in Jaipur. Shoes should be easy to slip on and off, due to requirements of most temples. and mosques

I'm going on the Feb 20-March 12 trip and am looking for a roommate. I'm very physically active and practice yoga regularly. I love music (sing professionally) and speak Spanish. Live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Jewish. Retired professional in health care and philanthropic education. Politically progressive, love to read, travel, and make new friends from around the work. Looking for a generally compatible person who doesn't snore loudly.
Frances Wolff Nov 23, 2014 at 11:40 PM

Judy. I originally signed up for the Feb 20-Mar 12 trip and was also looking for a roommate. I changed my date to Dec. 2015 for reasons too complicated to state, but would consider changing back. I am a retired University librarian and was a hippy type in a former life. I am also a singer/songwriter, active, love to read, travel and am politically progressive and am Jewish. I can't however guarantee the non-snoring as I have lived alone now for many years after divorce so I don't know (and my cat didn't seem to care). I might be able to "get it together" to go on this trip - there is only the one spot open which is for a shared roommate which must be you. My name is Francie Wolff and I'm from Springfield, Missouri and you can find me on Facebook. my email is (my son and family live in Monterey CA)
Frances Wolff Nov 23, 2014 at 11:46 PM

ps I would love to find a yoga/meditation retreat to attend before or after!
Judy Berger Nov 24, 2014 at 02:41 AM

Sounds great. I've just sent you a personal email.
