I was going to to on the January trip but I am concerned about the ebola and I am wondering if the trip is changed or possibly going to be canceled.
John Kristofic Sep 20, 2014 at 04:20 PM

The last I heard 11 people were signed up, including Pauline and I. It's a tough call. There is no ebola int the four countries we visit. The climate is different and the distance is great from the affected areas. We are not going to let this minimal threat disrupt our plans. That said, there are plenty of places to visit in the world without even a minimal threat. Hope this helps.

We are going January 16. Any advice on vaccinations and medications would be appreciated
Annetta Gross Sep 04, 2014 at 04:56 PM

We followed everthing Road Scholar recommended to avoid any surprises of requirements not met.
Annetta Gross Sep 04, 2014 at 04:57 PM

It helps to get the big picture if you read some of the suggested books. Eye of the Elephant is interesting.
John Kristofic Sep 04, 2014 at 06:50 PM

Thank you, I've ordered it,
John Kristofic Sep 16, 2014 at 02:52 PM

Reading it now….delightful book.

We are looking to meet other "scholars" who are going on the African Safari trip starting October 24.

We went Oct. 25, 2013 and it was an outstanding trip. Going in the dry season has advantages with no Mosquitos and easy to see the animals. The lodging was wonderful and so relaxing. Our small group of 15 was very congenial and interesting. Andre, our guide, was informative, relaxed and set the tone for a great experience. Keep your camera ready for surprise opportunities. Keep your packing simple and be ready for an awesome experience.

If you have taken this trip I would appreciate some advise on what clothing to wear, especially for the safari portion. In particular, shoes.

Arthur Lieb Jul 12, 2014 at 03:50 PM

I am booked for the November 4 tour. For each of my trips I prepare my own travel guide...history, economics, languages, fine and perfroming arts, etc. Information is a copy and paste job from various websites. I've made a 200+ page Word document and would be happy to share it with anyone. Send me your email address and I will gladly send it to you as an attachment.

Looking for a fellow traveler from Dulles to Johannesburg on 2/6 and wondering what you have planned for the extra day.

Nadine Price Jan 23, 2014 at 09:44 PM

My MD wrote a note on a prescription pad saying the yellow fever vaccine was contraindicated. My understanding is that where we are going the vaccine is not necessary, but a doctor's note is
needed when going back into SA from a yellow fever country. Are other folks taking the malaria prophylaxis? My doc gave me doxycycline to start two days before the trip. Also, going to Jo'burg one day early. Any recommendations on what to see during that extra day??
Nadine Price Feb 27, 2014 at 01:15 PM

To answer my own questions, either get the Yellow Fever vaccine or a note from your MD saying you are exempt. Get the malaria pills and start taking them in Jo'burg. Go a day early and ride the "Hop On/Hop Off'" two hour bus tour. It is safe and you can get off and see more of Jozi than you will with RS.

Patricia Clifford Jan 04, 2014 at 05:13 AM

Hi Ed. Getting the yellow fever certificate is a dilemma. I got one for Brazil & have travelled extensively. Never been asked for it once. If you don't want to get it, try asking your doctor for a letter explaining. It
usually works. Lots on our Tanzania trip did this.
