Looking for a fellow traveler from Dulles to Johannesburg on 2/6 and wondering what you have planned for the extra day.

Nadine Price Jan 23, 2014 at 09:44 PM

My MD wrote a note on a prescription pad saying the yellow fever vaccine was contraindicated. My understanding is that where we are going the vaccine is not necessary, but a doctor's note is
needed when going back into SA from a yellow fever country. Are other folks taking the malaria prophylaxis? My doc gave me doxycycline to start two days before the trip. Also, going to Jo'burg one day early. Any recommendations on what to see during that extra day??
Nadine Price Feb 27, 2014 at 01:15 PM

To answer my own questions, either get the Yellow Fever vaccine or a note from your MD saying you are exempt. Get the malaria pills and start taking them in Jo'burg. Go a day early and ride the "Hop On/Hop Off'" two hour bus tour. It is safe and you can get off and see more of Jozi than you will with RS.

Hi Ed. Getting the yellow fever certificate is a dilemma. I got one for Brazil & have travelled extensively. Never been asked for it once. If you don't want to get it, try asking your doctor for a letter explaining. It
usually works. Lots on our Tanzania trip did this.

Hi Annette. Requested you as a friend on FB. Hopefully, we can chat, if not send me an email.

Hi Carolyn. I live in Canada & was able to buy Rand at the bank. I ordered quite a lot in anticipation of extra travel I'll be doing afterwards. Problem is the big wad I have to carry around. Guess it will disappear quickly!

Annette Bittaker Jan 01, 2014 at 06:32 PM

Ed, there is not much choice on that one. it and the "yellow card" you will be issued on completion of immunization are required for entry into some of the countries. I was in Amazonian Ecuador where people were refused entry to the county because they did not have the required yellow card. A regular shot record will not substitute. It has to be given by a certified agent. I had to drive 50 miles to get mine. good thing-it lasts a long time!

Ed Cloughessy Jan 01, 2014 at 06:15 PM

our small town medics don't seem to be all together on the need for yellow fever shots for the over 60 group. what have some of you done about taking them or not?

Ed Cloughessy Dec 22, 2013 at 10:48 AM

We are going on the 2/7/2014 trip, and have read as much as possible. On my own I found, "Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness", by Alexandra Fuller, which follows a couple's love of the continent, especially thru Kenya, "Rhodesia" and Zambia from the 50's to 2010. Good read.
Nadine Price Dec 27, 2013 at 02:27 PM

Hi Ed, I am also on that trip, traveling a day early. Have you gotten an idea of what the temperatures will be once we're there?
Nadine Price Feb 27, 2014 at 01:21 PM

Hi Ed, what a great trip, eh? I also recommend reading "20 Chickens for a Saddle", "THIS is Africa", "Whatever You Do, Don't Run", and "South Africa, Culture Smart ".
