the taxi cost from the NL airport, st.john's is about $25 PER Person. that seems to make ride sharing useless for saving money. any comments? helen
Don Lewis Aug 15, 2013 at 12:50 AM

Our first trip. Moons Travel Guide says $28 plus $6 per person to downtown. Gullivers, Citywide and Jiffy. Not the 15 person van, just a taxi. Hope this helps. How is e'hostel so far? Best Regards, Don Lewis
Russell Bryant Aug 24, 2013 at 01:54 PM

Don, this is about our 15th e'hostel trip and so far we have NEVER been disappointed. Usually our expectations have been exceeded. this is however, only our second trip outside the USA; we had an incredible time in Panama, going throur the canal on a small boat. we're looking forward to meeting you.
Don Lewis Aug 25, 2013 at 03:28 PM

Great! Our trip through the canal was on a cruise ship. Looking forward to meeting you two as well. Will arrive after dinner on 9/6

Russell Bryant Aug 03, 2013 at 01:58 PM

Hi, My name is Linda. I'm from Pittsburgh and will be on the tour.
Marylee McGregor Aug 07, 2013 at 09:11 AM

Linda, I hope to meet you on the Sept. 6 trip. I've lived in Virginia my entire adult life, but was born and raised in the Pittsburgh area. See you next month. Marylee, Richmond, VA

For anyone who would like additional reading on Newfoundland, I have two suggestions: D. W. Prowse's History of Newfoundland and Wayne Johnston's novel based on Joey Smallwood's life. In my own reading I was constantly coming across references to Prowse's History and finally decided to try to find it. Since it was published in 1895, and I live in a very small town in Colorado, I thought it would be a challenge for inter-library loan. No problem. The day after I asked for it I received a phone call from the librarian with this web site, where it is available for free: www.archive.org/stream/historyof newfound...
Look for the version digitized by a Canadian library org--the google version omits maps, charts, some photos.
Marylee McGregor Aug 07, 2013 at 09:12 AM

Anne, can you tell us the title of the Johnston novel? I've been unable to identify it. Thanks
Laurie Nevin Aug 15, 2013 at 08:14 PM

Marylee, it is The Colony of Unrequited Dreams. I look forward to meeting you in September.
Marylee McGregor Aug 19, 2013 at 09:05 AM

Thanks Laurie. Actually, between the time I posted and when you responded I used Wikipedia to look up Smallwood. That entry lead me to the book, which I'm going to borrow as an e-book and carry with me on the trip (no time to read before then). See you in less than 3 weeks!
Laurie Nevin Sep 01, 2013 at 11:10 AM

I think you will enjoy the Johnston novel. I read it a year or two after it was published. I don't know how historically accurate it is, but it certainly gives a good general picture of what was going on in Smallwood's life, and it's a great story. I found Bernice Morgan's novel Cape Random in my library system. It doesn't seem to exist as an e-book, but at least it is a paperback. Perhaps we can compare Newfoundland novels during the trip. See you soon.
