I am the astronomer coordinator for the annual Grand Canyon Star Party on the South Rim. I notice that the information about the nightly star party states that it is held at Yavapai Point. Several years ago we moved the event over to the Main Visitor Center (VC). All during the day, some of us volunteer astronomers will be set up around Grand Canyon National Park with telescopes to show solar, lunar, and daytime planet views. The main event will begin around 8 PM in the VC theater, with a night talk as the twilight deepens. The telescopes will be set up in a commercial lot behind the visitor center for evening exploration for all visitors. There will also be night constellation tours at 9:00, 9:30, and 10:00 PM near the telescopes behind the VC. Welcome to the Universe!

Is there much light pollution around the visitor's center?
Jim OConnor Sep 20, 2014 at 12:14 PM

No. We block all lighting at the Visitor Center site for the event, with a red rope light for guidance from the Visitor Center to the parking lot where we are set up. We are at the high point of Grand Canyon National Park's South Rim, so we can see some light from Las Vegas, about 240 miles to the northeast, as well as some light from the town of Tusayan outside the entrance about 10 miles to the southeast. If you are familiar with Sky Quality Meters, our nightly average this year was magnitude 6.7 with two nights at 6.9. This is an extremely dark site.

Las Vegas is Northwest, and Tusayan is Southwest. Sorry

Where is the participant list?
Edna Alvarez Jun 07, 2013 at 11:41 PM

From my experience on prior trips w/ RS, they do not provide a participants' list prior to the program.
