Hi Peggy and Sylvia: I have already gotten my ticket for 2:20 pm on our free day. I thought that would give me enough time..At any rate, it is good to know others are making it there as well. I would also like to know who else is taking the flight from NY's Kennedy Airport . Looking forward to meeting you.
Karen Schulte Jul 24, 2014 at 05:00 PM

Just to add: Tickets are about 20.00, they take your credit card. Go directly to the Anne Frank House Website
Sylvia Forbes Jul 24, 2014 at 05:51 PM

Karen, How often are the tours? What time is your tour and is it for Sept. 8? Please let me know, and I will purchase one also. Thank you. I am looking forward to meeting you also. I was born in NY.
Karen Schulte Jul 24, 2014 at 06:25 PM

Hi Sylvia: Tours seem to be every 20 minutes, mine is for 2:20 Mon pm.
Karen Schulte Jul 24, 2014 at 06:27 PM

The web site is easy to use. They will take your credit card.

I'm taking the 9/5-9/18 trip, leaving from Houston. I've been advised to get a ticket for the Anne Frank House before leaving home.
Karen Schulte Jun 11, 2014 at 07:20 PM

Hi Peggy: I too have been advised to get tickets in advance and will go online to get a sense of how soon to get the tickets. Will you fly straight from Houston to Amsterdam? So glad to know someone else is going to the Frank house! Karen Schulte

Hi Peggy, I too am leaving from Houston on 9/5-9/18. I have been advised to purchase the ticket for the Anne Frank House. I have been trying to obtain info on how much free time we will have, so we can visit the Anne Frank House. So far, I haven't been successful.
Peggy DeMarsh Jul 24, 2014 at 11:39 AM

Karen and Sylvia, I have been replying in the wrong way so you, Karen, haven't seen some of my replies. Here is my latest comment on the Anne Frank ticket issue. I've met with some friends who did this trip in April and they had a wonderful time. They recommend getting a ticket, before traveling, for the Anne Frank House because some of their tour mates were unable to go due to sellouts on the only day they could go. I'm interesting in buying my ticket for the 4pm slot that includes a 30 minute introduction on Monday Sept 8. Are you able to find that on the website? I'm going to purchase my ticket in the next day or two. Let me know what you think.
Peggy DeMarsh Jul 24, 2014 at 11:42 AM

Sylvia, I received a bound booket with all sorts of information about the tour. Perhaps you can find it on the web site and print it out. It shows all our scheduled tours and free time. That's how I know that the day to go to the Anne a Frank House is that first Monday. I'm flying over on KLM and back on Air France. You?
Sylvia Forbes Jul 24, 2014 at 04:30 PM

Peggy & Karen, Monday, Sept. 8 we have free time for lunch and dinner. It would give us ample time to see the Anne Frank House, if it it open that day. Do you know how long the tour takes? i am taking a Delta flight from Houston to Atlanta and then on to Amsterdam. My return flight is on Air France. How much are the tickets and how often are the tours given. I am not very good looking up websites on my pc.

I am leaving from NYC on the July 11-24 trip. Anyone else leaving on the 11th?
Looking forward to our trip!

Karen Schulte May 30, 2014 at 06:50 PM

I will be taking the "Cities of Inspiration" tour 9/5 -9/18. I will be leaving from NYC Kennedy Airport. Anyone else leaving at the same time? Also for those of you who have taken this trip,
can you give feedback...and should I get tickets in advance to visit the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam or wait until I arrive?

Watch the movie "Tim's Vermeer" if available in your town. Unfortunately, the particular painting featured is in the Queen's private chambers in London. But we'll see other Vermeers in the Rijksmuseum.

Irv Smith Feb 15, 2014 at 10:44 AM

Museumplein is only a few blocks from our hotel, so anybody wanting to get pickpocketed can walk down after dinner to mingle with the other 800,000 revelers!

Irv Smith Feb 14, 2014 at 11:49 AM

People on tours starting in Amsterdam on April 25th should be aware that it's "Kings Day" national holiday. We're coming by train from Luxembourg and will have to get off at Schipol station (and will take taxi it to hotel if can't hook up with Road Scholar group at airport).

Wikipedia says:

Koningsdag now sees large-scale celebrations, with many concerts and special events in public spaces, particularly in Amsterdam. An outdoor concert is held on Amsterdam's Museumplein, where as many as 800,000 people may gather. To aid visitors in returning home by train after the festivities outdoor events must end by 20:00, and the Museumplein show by 21:00. The city centre is closed to cars, and no trams ride in the heart of the city; people are urged to avoid Amsterdam Centraal railway station and use other stations if possible from their direction. International trains that normally begin or terminate at Amsterdam Centraal are instead directed to a suburban stop.

In recent years parties and concerts have been held the evening before Koningsdag. Until 2013, nightclubs across the Netherlands organised special events for what became known as Koninginnenacht (Queen's Night). Many young people celebrate in the streets and squares (and in Amsterdam, the canals as well) throughout the night, and after all-night partying join the crowds at the vrijmarkt.

While King's Day celebrations take place throughout the Netherlands, Amsterdam is a popular destination for many revelers. Often the city's 750.000 residents are joined by up to 1 million visitors. In recent years Amsterdam authorities have taken some measures to try and stem the flow of visitors as the city simply became too full.

Those taking part in Koningsdag commonly dye their hair orange or wear orange clothing in honour of the House of Orange-Nassau, which rules over the Netherlands. Orange-coloured drinks are also popular. This colour choice is sometimes dubbed "orange madness", or in Dutch, oranjegekte.

My roommate is wife Jane! We're taking a repositioning cruise from MIA to BCN, and then will make our way by train to AMS -- stopping for a few days in LUX.

(This is for the 25Apr14 departure.)
