I am booked on the June 4th trip. Anyone else going? Really looking forward to the trip as my grandfather was Irish. Can any of you world travelers give me an idea of how much I should take in Euros?. Also British pounds as I am hooking up with the Great Gardens program after Ireland.

Mary, I look forward to meeting you and your husband in Ireland. I fly from Miami to Newark and on to Shannon. I have not heard from anyone else going on May 14th.

Laura Peyton Mar 17, 2015 at 07:24 PM

I envy all of you who have this trip to look forward to. It is a fantastic trip! We went last June. Hopefully you will be lucky enough to get Beibhinn as your guide. She is smart, cute, and fun. Enjoy!

Margaret Chilton Feb 27, 2015 at 04:06 PM

Just booked for June 25. My first trip to Ireland. Any other singles going?
Shirley Hill Feb 27, 2015 at 06:12 PM

Hi Margaret. I am also going on June 25 and my first trip to Ireland also. I will be arriving before the trip starts, and will be staying at the Park Inn by Raddison on the night of the 25th. I am also a single.
Nancy Dale Feb 28, 2015 at 08:58 AM

We arrived a day early last summer and stayed at the Park Inn. I highly recommend it. You arrive on a red-eye exhausted and having a day/night to sleep and adjust is very helpful. We actually booked 2 nights ahead so when we arrived at 6 am at the hotel (across the parking lot from Shannon airport, easily walkable w luggage carts available, we went right into our room and crashed rather than waiting for 3 pm check in. Made the whole trip nicer.

Trip insurance is a complicated subject! There are three basic types of insurance: 1. cancellation insurance, like the Berkley ins. offered through Road Scholar for about 10% the cost of the trip; 2. medical insurance while traveling, which Road Scholar includes automatically, and 3. medical evacuation insurance, which, per my reading of the Road Scholar ins. policy, is not included.
You'll need to decide what is most important for your folks based on where they are going, etc. AARP has some informative articles on the insurance issue.
Frankly, it's hard to make a good financial argument for cancellation insurance; the amount you can lose is finite, and it is a loss you can recover from. That said, I buy it because I'd fuss myself into the grave if I didn't.
If your parents travel a lot, it might be useful to get a Medicare supplemental that covers overseas medical care, and maybe even a separate evacuation ins. policy.

I almost always buy the insurance offered by RS as I trust them highly and believe they would not trust an unreliable company. That said, I have for years also been a member of MedJetAssist, which offers assistance for its members ANYTIME and ANYWhERE (over 150 miles from home) that you are admitted to a hospital. Beyond being a member, I have used their services when my husband (also a member) suffered a heart attack when we were in the US and barely 150 miles from home. They require one simple phone call which you make, supplying them with a physician's name and the hospital phone number. From there, you do nothing but concern yourself with the incident requiring hospitalization. They arrange everything with the hospital you want to be delivered to. They appear at your bedside with two EMT's and their own stretcher, remove you to their small specially equipped jet and transport you and one loved one to the bedside of the hospital you designated. They are unbelievably kind, efficient, and so well trained. It is somewhat costly but I would never travel worldwide without them. You can't know how much you appreciate them until you need to call them. I love to travel and have been all over the world. I lump the cost of my care into the cost of the trip when deciding if I can afford the destination I'm interested in. Just sayin'

I have been on 22 RS programs and purchased insurance every time. I have had only one claim from a trip last summer and I had no problem with Berkley Insurance which is not owned by Elderhostel as far as I know (as they sell insurance to many others). Cost is based on a % of the program cost so it varies by program. You can see the expected cost for each program on RS web site in the information for each program. My one claim was for overnight stay due to problems with Southwest Airlines and SW would not pay for hotel room in Burbank California for my granddaughter and myself. I had not purchased the air travel thru RS but Berkley still reimbursed me for the $300 hotel room which was all SW could locate for us on a busy Friday night in the summer.
