Regarding the amount of hiking in this program: I attended the program in May 2015 and found they had "improved" it in response to feedback by significantly increasing the amount of hiking. This was fine except that I would have preferred being told in advance since I would then have brought hiking boots instead of hiking shoes, which were inadequate over the rough, very wet (several inches of water that went right over shoes) terrain. I would also suggest good rain pants and jacket since the rain and wind can be bitter. We got soaked even with our rain gear. I was sorry that a planned visit to a garden was cancelled for more hiking. I would also not recommend this trip for anyone allergic to dogs. There are only 2 dogs, but they were often in the dining hall, library and common sitting room. I had to use my asthma medication every day.

Thank you for that update! How many people were in your group?

We were 11: a nice small group. There were also two other groups at Aigas at the same time, mostly Brits, doing other programmes. This brought the total of guests to about 30. Weall shared the common sitting room and dining hall and the library was also used for meals to accommodate everyone. Roadscholar guests were invited to sign up for early morning and evening hide viewing of wildlife and there were evening lectures open to everyone. It was very nice socially.

Much appreciated! I am very much looking forward to this - my first Road Scholar trip.

There were several comments that not much hiking/walking is involved in this trip. We are attending in September 2015. Do we need hiking boots or just good walking shoes?
Emily Schwartz May 18, 2015 at 09:35 PM

Either would be fine. I would suggest very lightweight rain pants and rain jacket. Google these on the internet. Many companies make them, such as campmor.
Betty Eppler May 18, 2015 at 10:56 PM

Thanks. We will check out some rain pants.

Hi, Betty. My husband and I will be on the Sept. trip as well. We look forward to meeting you.

Is anyone planning on taking the train to Edinburgh after the conclusion of our program on May 17, 2015? Debbie W.

Has anyone asked about the amount of walking/hiking on this trip. One of the reviewers said that there was not very much.
Susan Schmidt Sep 15, 2014 at 08:24 AM

In May, we requested/ begged for more walking, so Aigas scheduled one van for "slow, short walk" and one van for very-slightly-more "longer" walk.. On circle walk, several of us walked twice around.

Am attending the August 28 - Sept. 7, 2014 program. I ordered the RSPB book Handbook of Scottish Birds. It is light enough to carry in a backpack. Then a friend returned from Scotland where she had just purchased a nice gift for me - the exact same book. I would be happy to share this book with another participant and mail it to you. However, I would need to know about this before Aug. 1 Emily at EMILYSGFL@gmail.com

My husband and I are signed up for the May 2014 Walking in the Scottish Highlands. Anyone else from Minnesota signed up?

Cathy F. Jan 05, 2014 at 11:43 AM

Just signed up for the July, 2014 Walking the Highlands Tour--a trip I've been dreaming about since my first visit to Scotland 20 years ago! Can't wait! Coming from Chicago. Who else is on board for this one?
