After having to cancel a month long trip to Tunisia and Morocco last year due to plantar fasciitis (not exactly a life threatening illness) and helping two people make claims this spring on a trip I organized, one because they were three days late due to plane issues and one because she fell three days into the tour and had to return home - I would no longer go without insurance. I did when I was younger, but no longer.

Linda Lindert Sep 26, 2014 at 01:49 PM

I spent $800 mostly on art in the two weeks. I think my husband spent about $500 on meals for us and on misc. I am so glad I bought 7 photographs, etchings, and paintings. I have had them framed and they will be lifetime memories of the trip. One has little time in some of the galleries so it is important to choose quickly. Also, Cuban art is starting to reach collectors and is rising in price.

I took $700 and wish I had about $100 more of cucus. As Linda Lindert says there were great art small enough to put in suitcase. I also aggree that you can't afford to loose the price of the trip, get the travel insurance.

My wife and I are traveling to Cuba on the Mar 20 - Apr 5 trip. RS gives us a guideline of $1000 per week per person as funds for spending money. Seems high. Can anyone shed any light on this subject?

Diane Gruver Sep 21, 2014 at 08:22 PM

Hi, I'm Diane Gruver from NJ/near NYC. Anyone going on the 1/30-2/15/15 trip?
Stevi S Sep 26, 2014 at 05:01 PM

Hi Diane,
Stevi S Sep 26, 2014 at 05:01 PM

Hi Diane, I am going on the 1/30 - 2/14 trip in reverse - is that the same one?
Diane Gruver Sep 27, 2014 at 06:37 PM

I fly into santiago de Cuba and work my way toward Havana, is that the one you're on? Wow, cancelled for our plantar faciitis, I better go over to rehap, keep putting it off. Thx for wake-up call.
Stevi S Oct 03, 2014 at 02:04 PM

Hi Diane, Yes, that is the one I am on. Nice to meet you.

My husband and I are planning a trip to Cuba Jan or Feb, 2015. How necessary do you think purchasing travel insurance for two weeks in Cuba is?
John Cubit Aug 31, 2014 at 11:24 PM

I standardly buy insurance for trips like this. If you miss the plane, you miss the trip. You can't jump on the next plane. If you get sick, you will need special plane arrangements to get back. Evaluate the risks and see if you want to bet the $10,000+ trip cost on nothing going wrong.
Stevi S Oct 03, 2014 at 02:08 PM

Hi, It is not only the two weeks in Cuba that becomes an issue. It is what happens if you develop a medical condition prior to the trip which forces you to cancel? As I said above, after three experiences using insurance in the past two years - I now buy it. I would suggest looking at a trip insurance comparison site though before you automatically purchase the RS insurance. I found it for less. Do factor in your airfare to Miami, which my credit card covers.

All the rooms would accommodate double, but I was a single, paying a single supplement. When we traveled as a couple the price per room covered both of us. It is priced as any hotel room

Bryan Warner Aug 23, 2014 at 12:04 PM

Is this price for single or double occupancy of sleeping rooms?

Gladys Gilliland Aug 20, 2014 at 06:37 PM

You can probably get most books from your Library. I didn't buy any except Telex from Havana takes place just as Fidel and his army starts the take over of Cuba.
Many of places names in that book have been renamed by Castro, but it is fairly easy to figure out where this all began. I would get a map of Cuba as it is a big help in figuring out where you are going. .
John Cubit Aug 20, 2014 at 09:27 PM

I do believe in reading-up on a place before traveling there, so I bought the $100 set. It was not worth it. Take Gladys' advice and get a GOOD detailed map of Cuba. Pay attention to the proximity of Havana to Miami and the proximity of the other end of Cuba to Haiti. This will help explain much of the culture and history you will encounter. The most important book I read for the trip was "Mosquito Empires: Ecology and War in the Greater Caribbean, 1620-1914" by J.R. McNeill. I'd also recommend reading up on the the Cuban war of independence from Spain--myopically named the Spanish-American War in the U.S. In reading this history, pay attention to Maceo, an amazingly remarkable hero of the war. The same goes for Jose Marti. This is a great trip. Keep an open, inquisitive mind. You will learn a lot. I posted a lot of trip photos at

I just "journeyed" via your fabulous photos! I am headed to Cuba in late January-early Feb. I can't wait! MANY THANKS for your wonderful images. Not only does it take the pressure off of me to capture every image I see, but it's also given me to idea of going to MY rehearsals, scene shops and costume shop (I am an actor in Richmond, and work with several different theatre companies in the area) to capture some of what my own work environment looks like. I'll carry them with me on both a disc drive and on my phone. As I said, CAN
