Love to learn in a small-group setting? This collection of programs has at most 10-24 participants.
See our Small Group programs.

Easy
For people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
Moderate
These programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
Active
For people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately Challenging
For hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
Challenging
Get ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Photography in Cuba. I just finished the Road Scholar 15-day trip through Cuba. We had fantastic photo opportunities for people, cars, and buildings, but not so much for landscapes. Because of the people-to-people emphasis of the trip, we had better access for people (e.g., musicians, dancers, general population) photography than the dedicated photo trips to Cuba I have seen advertised else where. As discussed previously, consult any day-length calculator for Cuba on the dates you will be there. Actual usable daylight availability will depend on cloud cover and the sensitivity of your camera. Be sure to bring plenty of memory cards.

Why would one need $200 per day if almost everything is paid for?

You will not need $200/day--see my other posts for explanation.

Those of you with and I on this journey might find this article in today's NYT,
http://lens.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/04/03/blogging-a-bridge-from-havana/?hp.
Also, if anyone is under wight on luggage help us out: we have about 20 pounds of dental supplies to take over.
See you tomorrow in Miami.

Tom and I will be on the April 18 to May 3rd trip. Anyone else going to be traveling then? Sure do appreciate all the comments and suggestions from everyone. We, too, are hoping there will be some free time to wander and take pictures.

This question is directed to John Cubit. When you return from Cuba, please post on this Discussion Board - especially with regard to the amount of time (sunshine) you had for photography and how much freedom you had for personal exploration. We discussed these questions in February on this Board. Thanks, as I am sure it will be of interest to others, also.

Regarding times of sunrise, sunset, and twilight, these all vary by time of year. There are a number of free or low cost apps and computer software downloads that provide these data for any place and any time. One that I recommend is "The Photographer's Ephemeris." It also provides the compass direction of sunrise/sunset, and the same for moon phases.

On the 15-day trip in the first half of April, we had plenty of time to photograph in the afternoons and evenings after the formal parts of the programs. There were no restrictions on our movements. We walked the areas around our hotels, and some people took taxis to other locations. Depending on the cloud cover and type of camera, we could photograph until after 7:30 pm.

The charter flights between Miami and Cuba use standard Boeing 737 aircraft, with standard overhead bins and underseat space. The charter airline has the standard metal frames at the check-in desks to test the dimensions of your carry-on bags. Just follow the airline standards for width, length, height limits for you carry-on bags.

The standards only vary by a few inches among airlines flying these kinds of aircraft. (Don't be deceived by the "Sky King" name of the charter airline--this is not the name of the type of plane.)

Hi.
Regarding bringing US dollars into Cuba, does anyone have a suggestion as to denominations ($20, $50)? I'd lie to bring as few bills as possible. Thanks is advance.

Don't take US DOLLARS you will lose 12% upon conversion.. You need to bring either EUROS OR CANADIAN DOLLARS.. Take at least $200 USD per day since you cannot use a US BANK CREDIT CARD.. ONLY CONVERT EITHER YOUR EUROS OR Canadian Dollars on a daily basis to CUC'S .. Othewise if you convert it all you will pay again to convert it back.. Bring either EUR or CAD 50 OR 100 NOTES.. Hope that helps.

US$200 per day?? Do you mean this for the Road Scholar program, where all lodging and many meals are alread paid as part of the program?

I just finished the Road Scholar 15-day trip. The three nights of eating at top paladares would cost less than $50, including appetizers, best entrees, wine, tips, etc. ($30 could easily cover most paladar meals.) Even if you buy a lot of art, CDs, etc., you will NOT need $200/day. I spent about $500 total during the whole 15-day trip.
