We are thinking of enrolling in this program in 2016. Since the border between Turkey and Syria seems to be wide open, we have some safety concerns. Many ISIL volunteers are traveling through Turkey to join the fighters. What is Road Scholar doing to ensure a safe trip? This is a dream trip for me and we wanted to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary on it. But are rethinking. Any thoughts?
Margaret DuBois Feb 28, 2015 at 06:11 PM

Linda - My first reaction to your post: No program can guarantee you safety, but RS surely would not plan to go into dangerous areas. Please look at a map. Turkey is an enormous country and this itinerary goes nowhere near the border with Syria. If by "wide open" you mean that it is possible to sneak across the border, that is true of probably every border in the world. Turkey is not facilitating border crossings for people wanting to join ISIS; they undoubtedly cross secretly outside of regular crossing points. In any case, there are relatively few trying to do this and they have probably made their arrangements ahead of time. Turkey is working with other governments to try to stop them and/or track them, and has succeeded in several cases. The media reports on sensational events, and usually unpleasant ones, rather than day-to-day stuff. In any case, lots can happen between now and 2016, so perhaps you should wait until later to sign up for this trip and see what the situation is then.

My wife and I have enrolled for the 4/22 to 5/8 time frame. Anyone else going from the Boston area?

Martha Scotford Feb 03, 2015 at 03:03 PM

I am going on this trip plus extension leaving April 22. I am looking for a compatible female roommate. I am a non-smoking, active 70 yo. Is anyone else looking to share?

Margaret DuBois Dec 15, 2014 at 07:54 PM

I'm going on this trip and the extension starting April 29. It would be fun to correspond with others going at this time.

We are thinking about going on the May 6-22 trip. We live in West Virginial
Margaret DuBois Dec 31, 2014 at 12:25 PM

Funny - I was born in West Virginia and lived there until I was 12 when we moved to the Boston area. We lived in Moundsville and Wheeling. Have you been to Turkey or the Near East before? I lived in Greece in the 70s and studied classical and near eastern art history and archaeology so I'm looking forward to this trip.
HANNO KIRK Dec 31, 2014 at 12:43 PM

We have both been to Jordan.

Having trouble with the Return key. We have wanted to go to Turukey for along time. My older brother and his wife took the toor several years ago and loved it. I have studied Sufism, so that is one part that intrigues me. hannokirk@frontier.com

If you happen to get the AWE channel, this evening's "Wonders of the World" program is 30 minutes on the Hagia Sophia. (I just checked to see whether this program is available on Amazon Prime but couldn't find it).

So it's 2-1/2 weeks until the October 1st program starts. I'm James from Overland Park, Kansas. I've read "A Traveller's History of Turkey" by Richard Stoneman (5th edition) and "Crescent and Star" by Stephen Kinzer; but I've gotten bogged down in the middle of "Birds without Wings" by Louis de Bernieres. And I've done a fair amount of web research about the places we'll be visiting. My other Road Scholars experiences include India (November 2013) and Russia (April-May 2014). My late wife and I spent 3 weeks in Istanbul in 2011 but this will be my first time in Anatolia. Looking forward to hearing from fellow travelers!
