Can any past travelers suggest a way to stay in touch w/ US via text or phone? We have iPhones w/ AT&T. Do we need a sim card? Has anyone used Viber for text in Cuba?
Thomas Bruno Nov 25, 2015 at 11:16 AM

We traveled on the Cuba trip in January 2015. We stayed at the Hotel Nacional and a resort in Varadero. We found no practical way to stay in touch with United States United States by text message or telephone. the Internet was expensive and extremely slow. The local guide carries a cell phone in case of life or death emergencies. Make the best of being disconnected. It's like turning the hands of time back to the 1970s. The folks back home will get along just fine without you.

Anyone traveling Dec. 5-13? I want to know if people are bringing small giveaways and what type. Susie Shullman

Since my February 2015 trip, I've been on a "mission" to supply books to Cuba Libro, the English bookstore in Havana. I've bought many used books, and I'm looking for Road Scholar volunteers to take a few in their luggage. There's a great demand for books in English, and postal charges are exhorbitant. If you're willing to volunter, please contact me at dmjackson5@comcast.net, and I'll mail you a few paperbacks. Your RS guide will know how to get them to Cuba Libro. Thanks!

When we went this past July, we could not find any travel insurance that could write for Cuba other than the Road Scholar's. We always purchase travel insurance when we travel (and we travel a lot), but not pleased at all with what the Road Scholar insurance offered. Read it carefully. The reimbursement for some things (such as trip disruption)would be less than your cost of the insurance. Have a friend who travelled to India this past year with Road Scholar. Trip was delayed for a day in New York. She incurred expenses of new plane ticket, hotel in New York, transportation, and one day of the tour missed in India. She got little satisfaction. Her reimbursement was less than what she paid for the insurance policy. I called and asked questions about the insurance and got vague answers. So we went without insurance on the Cuba trip - a first for us.

I agree with you Barbara! It seemed very expensive and not very good. I always get the insurance when traveling, but I passed on this insurance.
Elaine Coleman Nov 15, 2015 at 09:21 PM

Thanks for all the info.

Elaine Coleman Nov 15, 2015 at 05:41 PM

Has anyone bought travel insurance outside of Road Scholar's?
Shonda Farner Nov 15, 2015 at 06:04 PM

I always use www.insuremytrip.com You can search out exactly what insurance you want at a savings.
Elaine Coleman Nov 15, 2015 at 09:20 PM

Fantastic! Thanks.

do not have a booking yet because iwant to find a roommate first. then I am flexible regarding dates.ewilks0@gmail.com
Roberto Gray Nov 13, 2015 at 08:00 PM

You can get the lower rate on this trip just by being willing to accept a roommate. It's a bit of a gamble, but I did it and saved the extra fee.
