28 Days | 27 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

We will be part of the program starting on Jan. 2. We have read Bill Bryson's "A Sunburned Country" and found it very entertaining. Is there anything else that is a "must" read before we depart? We are getting excited.
David Berkenbilt Nov 24, 2014 at 07:00 PM

The PBS series "Wild Australasia" was aired some time ago but may still be available from the website. It gave an excellent insight into the wildlife. However, the program is beautifully set up, and you'll have excelent orientation sessions each time you move to a new place, and the program description in the book, will make more sense after you've toured that part of the program.

Recommendations: THE BONE PEOPLE, THE FATAL SHORE, mysteries by Arthur Upfield

Anne Thomson Nov 11, 2014 at 06:18 PM

Thanks Jo Ann - I will take your advice. Don't worry about shorts - at my age I don't wear them anymore!!!

Chris Cannon Nov 11, 2014 at 05:59 PM

The opera house was casual. Jo Ann's ideas below are perfect. We took bug nets for Uluru but did not find them necessary. Flies were a bit pesty, but not overwhelming. Agree with David (below) to avoid shorts at the opera house.
David Berkenbilt Nov 11, 2014 at 07:32 PM

Flies were a bit pesty, but I found my bug net useful. We were told that after rain, the flies are awful. Our weather was dry, but it's unpredictable. The winter is a rainy season (Nov-March) I'd say bring a bug net, just in case. One shop in Australia had them for Au$6.00. (US$ about $5.00)
David Berkenbilt Nov 11, 2014 at 07:38 PM

Oops, Summer is rainy season Nov-March. Google "rainy season in australia" for more detail.

Jo Ann Orsborn Nov 11, 2014 at 03:34 PM

I always take a blackt-shirt and a bright scarf for any "dressy" occasion. These countries are very casual.
Sharon Koscik Nov 11, 2014 at 03:41 PM

Thanks. Did you need a bug net for your face at any point?
Maureen Kody Nov 12, 2014 at 09:17 PM

Only in Alice Springs/Uluru area..

Anne Thomson Nov 11, 2014 at 03:02 PM

I am also on the January 2 trip - was wondering what to take for our opera house outing? I only travel with carryons so don't have a lot of room for extras.
David Berkenbilt Nov 11, 2014 at 03:27 PM

Just got back Nov 8 from this trip. Every one is informal in AustraliEvery day attiire should be fine, but probably not shorts..

Sharon Koscik Nov 11, 2014 at 12:47 PM

We are going on the Jan 2nd trip. Anything special we should pack?

Just came back from Australia NZ. Don't pack too much! Definitely sunglasses. Feeding Roos, seeing opera house, Mauri in NZ, Uluru in Aus. Reef, volcanoes, court house, penguins on walk back! Keep schedules for memories. First RS. Enjoyed. Worth it allM
JANET S REED Oct 22, 2014 at 04:48 PM

What would you say was the longest and/or most difficult walk on the trip? I generally have no trouble walking but someone suggested walking poles. I don't want to haul stuff I don't need.
