Thank you, Harry and Maxine. I've decided to go with the Gold Rush: Past and Present program. I really just wanted to get back to Ouray. The program spends time there, and includes a jeep excursion. Maybe I can work in a little hiking, too! Just don't think that 4 - 8 mile consecutive hikes in elevation are right for my sea-level self. I appreciated your feedback.

Maxine Thompson Feb 16, 2014 at 02:08 PM

I did this hike last summer (Hi Harry!). It was very challenging. I am pretty fit, but the elevation was a killer for me (I live in Oregon at about 500 feet but also spend quite a bit of time around 2000 feet. I enjoyed the trip very much (the people were great) but I would not do it again. Some days you get to about 12,000 feet. Everyone is affected differently by elevation, for me it was not great! Also bear in mind that you start each day very early (to avoid afternoon thunderstorms).

I am seriously thinking about this, I'm a hiker but my hikes have been at sea-level (I'm from Florida). Is this something I should even consider? How challenging is it? I've been to Ouray a couple of times, but aside from hiking to the waterfall, haven't hiked there.

I did this last year coming from sea level. It is challenging but some folks laid our a day or two. It does gradate up in challenge through the week so the last is most sever. Most of the folks were very active people age 55-78.

I am registered for this program, flying from Portland OR to either Grand Junction or Denver. Would be interested in carpooling/car sharing from either airport, would prefer not to have to rent a car. Any suggestions on how to get from Grant Junction to Ouray without renting a car?
Harry Sargent May 26, 2013 at 09:17 PM

I am flying to Montrose which is 30 miles away. Then a shuttle. I plan to rent a shuttle and have found one other person to share with.
Maxine Thompson May 27, 2013 at 02:02 PM

Thank you Harry. If I can figure out how to get to Montrose from Grand Junction I might take you up on this. I am exploring transportation options from Grand Junction to Montrose but so far not coming up with munch. Am also considering just biting the bullet and renting a car at Grand Jucntion Airport in which case I could pick you up in Montrose.
Harry Sargent May 28, 2013 at 08:49 PM

You do not need to come to Montrose. Call these guys for ground transportation. Mountain Limo: 970-728-9606 and Telluride Express: 970-728-6000

I have signed up. My current plans are to drive from Denver in my car. I would share a ride or pay to ride with someone. I will be alone.
Harry Sargent May 04, 2013 at 12:06 PM

I will probably not be driving from Denver after all.
Harry Sargent May 12, 2013 at 10:37 PM

Will be shuttling from Montrose on the 3rd with one other person so room to share. Same on the 10th.

I would be very interested in taking this program (originating out of Ouray,CO) if there were others who would like to make this a Jeeping (4x4), photography trip with a local driver (rental jeep co.) instead of a hiking trip. I am an actual senior (65+) and must ride now instead of all that hiking. I would sign up now, if we could jeep instead of hike -- it would be worth the extra cost of jeep rental. Please let Road Scholar know if you agree with this idea.
