Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

My husband and I are signed up for the Sept 7-20 "Italian Classics" RS program. Is anyone reading this who will be on that trip?

Anita Farrar May 14, 2013 at 04:19 PM

My companion and I are taking this trip in late Sept., first time for me. Does anyone know anything about the designer outlet mall outside of Florence? Being a bit of a fashionista, I would love to take some time to explore the shopping there.

My husband and I are also recently retired, and this is also our first RS trip and first trip to Europe. We'll all be newbies together.
June Harris May 10, 2013 at 05:19 PM

You'll have a fine time. Enjoy!

Marianne Young Apr 30, 2013 at 10:37 AM

Thanks for your input about the activity. My husband and I just retired and this will be our first RS trip and our first trip to Europe. We are very excited.
June Harris Apr 30, 2013 at 11:11 AM

You'll love it. I found the hotel in Florence to be particularly charming.

Marilyn Apr 29, 2013 at 04:24 PM

June's comments were right on. As long as you keep these suggestions in mind you will do just fine.
June Harris Apr 29, 2013 at 04:41 PM

Thanks, Marilyn. I might also say that I came back in better shape than when I left. :)

Marianne Young Apr 29, 2013 at 03:26 PM

We are doing the Italian Classics tour in late September. I know it is an active trip with two miles of walking per day and lots of standing at the museums. We are healthy but want to make sure that the activity level is appropriate for us. Any thoughts?
June Harris Apr 29, 2013 at 03:42 PM

Marianne: I'm 72, only in so-so shape, and I didn't have problems. We also had a couple of 80+ travelers, one with a cane, and they seemed to do fine. Take every opportunity you get to sit down, don't try to out race the 30 yr olds, and if you feel you're overdoing it, skip an event if you wish. You'll be fine.

Pat Fisher Apr 26, 2013 at 07:08 PM

Virginia, Got your note. We are also excited about trip. Already less than 2 weeks away. We leave from Houston.

Irene Patton Apr 24, 2013 at 11:50 AM

My husband and I will be a part of the May 5-18th "Italian Classics" program. Afterwards we will have 3 days on our own using Florence as our base. We hope to visit Siena, San Gimignano, Pisa and Lucca. Any advice from others who have been to these places would be welcome. Then we will join "The Amalfi Coast and Sorrento" on May 21st.

We love Road Scholar trips and have been to Argentina, Antarctica, China, Botswana, Zambia, Ecuador, Galapagos and Peru on previous RS trips. Looking forward to being in Italy for the first time.
See you all soon!

I envy you. Florence was my favorite place on the classics program.
Edward Gazzano Apr 24, 2013 at 01:31 PM

Hope you have a chance to spend time in Positano, by far the most charming of the Amalfi Coast towns, in my opinion. From there you can take the boat to Capri also.
Signe Sheldon Apr 25, 2013 at 06:32 PM

If you haven't lready seen it, rent and watch "Tea With Mussolini" before you go to San Gimignano. Lovely hill town. Stunning vistas. In Lucca, Puccini's home/museum. If you're Michelangelo fans, I strongly recommend Casa Buonarroti while you're in Florence.
