Jean Thieroff Sep 14, 2014 at 10:41 PM

My husband and I are traveling on the Oct. 16th trip.

Marilyn Demler Sep 14, 2014 at 07:14 PM

Any of our fellow travelers for Oct 7th on here?

Jean Thieroff Sep 14, 2014 at 04:22 PM

I am interested in seeing some of the birds of China. Anyone other birders out there?

Douglas Smith Aug 17, 2014 at 07:06 PM

General note from CDC - In Shaanxi providence where the Terracotta Warriors are located Japanese Encephalitis is prevalent and they recommend vaccination.
Search China travel and drill down on this disease in China. Most likely overkill for group like ours but should be noted. Tour info makes no mention of this issue.

I just looked this up. No need to panic. One site sums up the recommendations: "For travelers who may spend a month or more in rural areas and for short-term travelers who may spend substantial time outdoors in rural areas, especially after dusk." It's relatively rare in travelers (20 reported cases between 1999 and 2008 according to one study even including those staying for more than a month in rural areas), is mosquito born (you can use mosquito repellant), doesn't affect 99 % of the people who are actually infected through a mosquito bite.
Douglas Smith Aug 19, 2014 at 12:43 PM

Thanks, you found more than was on CDC website. I didn't see the number of actual cases just CDC warning and what happens if you do get it. I Personally wasn't too worried. However my doctor was insisting I get vaccinated based on CDC recommendation. I alway carry spray bottle of deep woods off.

Thanks. I was just concerned that people who don't have time to get this vaccination or whose doctors either don't have it or recommend it wouldn't be overly frightened. Thanks.

can anyone give some insight into weather for oct16-nov5 trip

Deborah Rie Jul 24, 2014 at 10:00 PM

We are interested in anyone going with us on the Oct. 16 trip. Anyone flying out of NYC?

Girlie Wong Jun 17, 2014 at 06:32 AM

I am planning to fly to Beijing from Malaysia. Possible to let me know the ETA of your group from USA into Beijing?
Douglas Smith Jun 30, 2014 at 10:10 PM

First we would need to know your trip date. Per my flight tickets (UA889) out of SF purchased from RoadScholar I arrive in Peking on Thursday at 2:40pm Sept 12th.
Girlie Wong Jul 01, 2014 at 08:11 AM

My trip date is Aug 21. Any idea as to possibility of sandstorm in August?
Herbert Stein Jul 01, 2014 at 12:41 PM

No idea about sandstorms. My flight from the US is supposed to arrive on August 22nd at 2:20 at Beijing Airport.
Herbert Stein Jul 01, 2014 at 12:41 PM

Sorry, that's 2:20 in the afternoon.
Douglas Smith Jul 01, 2014 at 02:30 PM

Herbert, we must be on different flights that arrive at roughly same time. Rechecked my 4/10 reservation and United today. Flight UA889 from San Fran arrives in Beijing at 2:40pm Sept 14th.
Douglas Smith Jul 01, 2014 at 02:37 PM

Oops, miscued different date. Yes sand storms in August in Beijing are a possibility but I wouldn't worry about them too much. They are semi-rare.

Karen Wise Jun 11, 2014 at 08:05 PM

We are on the Oct 16th trip and are interested in recommendations for books or sites to start reading in advance. Any thoughts?
Margaret Sander Jun 21, 2014 at 01:56 PM

WE are on the Sept. 11th trip. I have read Peter Hessler's River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze and enjoyed that. I have Cambridge Illustrated History of China--but don't think I will tackle that (at least yet!)
