Anyone heading out for the April 18, 2014 trip? Any advice from the veterans of the trip? It's our first trip to China.
John Rottersman Mar 20, 2014 at 10:56 AM

If you are a coffee drinker, bring Starbucks Via, a great instant coffee. Bring a small flashlight and leave it on your bedstand in case of emergency and power outage (we didn't have any). Get general antibiotics from your doctor. Have a great trip...we loved our trip in October.

Two months to go. Looking at immunization requirements at CDC and wondering if going whole hog is necessary. Big money if so. Got a upgraded camera and we're testing out different cloth materials for post-sink washing drying times. Laundry soap is sold in very small plastic packets of 50 leaves, 5 per sink-load. Lots of prep materials and China based movies everywhere you look. Language will be bit of a stretch though. Jan Sande and John Higbie.

My doctor recommended a hepatitis A immunization within 6 months of the trip. I have read quite a bit on Chinese customs and took Chinese for travelers at the local community college. Does anyone know how many people are on this trip. Am I the only one going on oct 7th?
Mary Hedgcock Sep 10, 2013 at 03:19 PM

Our immunizations were mostly covered by prescription insurance. Hep A is good to have "just because" and it lasts 25 years or so.a

Hello everyone. First time Road Scholar travelers taking this Oct 7 China tour from Southern California, looking forward to a completely foreign experience with excitement and trepidation. Anyone have any recommendation for books on Chinese history or politics? I recommend "Farewell my Concubine" to learn an appreciation of Beijing opera. Looking forward...

Any idea the maximum number of participants for China Train and Yangtze Riverboat Program?

Premium Email Subscriber Jun 24, 2013 at 04:52 PM

Thanks for the information. Guess I will be packing more or at least some concentrated laundry soap for sink washing.

Anyone aware of availability and cost of hotel laundry on this trip?
John Rottersman Jun 24, 2013 at 09:21 AM

I got the detailed program information for the October 7 2013 trip. It says "Sample costs from China are 35 yuan per shirt/t-shirt ($5.50) and 5-10 yuan for socks ($.80 - $1.50). Coin-op laundry facilities are not available". It also says "All of your hotels and Yangtze vessels offer same day service".

Jeanette & John from the Chicago area will be on the October 7, 2013 trip. We are leaving 1 day early on United's non-stop, ORD->PEK. Lynda, are you still scheduled on this trip? Looking forward to meeting folks!
Mary Hedgcock Jun 19, 2013 at 01:58 PM

We will also be leaving from Chicago a day early on United and look forward to meeting folks at the airport while we wait.
John Rottersman Jun 20, 2013 at 08:14 AM

Looking forward to meeting you Mary. I left you a voice message if you want to get together for lunch some day.
Lynda Dowling Jun 25, 2013 at 12:00 PM

Yes, I am still going. But I am not leaving early. I will be leaving on the 7th from Kansas City.
