Debby, If my wife and i miss connecting with Linc and the others. Maybe we can connect. Thanks.

Sterling Lauer Nov 04, 2014 at 03:45 PM

I am so jealous of all of you going on this trip. As mentioned in a previous post, we did this trip last November, and it was great. We loved Christina Gregorin, our resource person. She gave wonderful lectures and field trips and knows everything about Venice. I hope you have safe travels, and a marvelous experience. Please post and let us know how it goes. And I'm interested to find out how the transport from the airport worked out for everyone. (Mrs.) Sterling Lauer, Fort Worth, TX

Thank you!
George Dillon Nov 04, 2014 at 06:25 PM

Linc, All,Thanks. I will meet all of you at baggage claim #3. I am looking forward to this trip

Robert "Linc" Clay Nov 04, 2014 at 12:44 PM

Good Afternoon George - I have read the water taxis take from 6 to 8 depending on baggage. I would suggest we all meet at baggage claim #3 and then we can get a count and see what our options are. I have also read that at high or low tides the water taxi may have to drop us at the Rialto Bridge (which is the about where the orange Alilaguna leaves us as well). We are hitting the spring tides with the high on Friday around 10 AM and the low around 5 PM. That would put us mid-tide so presumably/hopefully if we opted for the water taxi it could get us to the hotel. There is also a 60% chance of rain on Friday which may decrease the attractiveness of the walk from Rialto. See you there. Cheers.
Mary Williams Nov 04, 2014 at 05:59 PM

Lincoln, you are a mine of useful information! We might ask the taxi driver about the tide situation before we get on. It looks like we'll have seven, and I think Road scholars generally travel with relatively little luggage.
Mary Williams Nov 04, 2014 at 06:04 PM

I didn't say Lincoln ! My computer is putting words in.my mouth again.
Robert "Linc" Clay Nov 05, 2014 at 06:30 AM

No worries Mary, it actually is Lincoln; Linc being the short form.

George Dillon Nov 04, 2014 at 10:32 AM

Hello Judy, et al,

My wife and I will be arriving at 12:05 p.m. on Lufthansa and are wondering if you still need additional passengers for the water taxi. Sorry to be late in the conversation. Thanks.
Debby and Phil Lewis Nov 04, 2014 at 12:10 PM

Hi George - If you find you're too late for the group water taxi, Phil and I arrive SwissAir at 2:04. Planning to take the Alilaguna Orange Line to Rialto. Glad to have you join us if you feel like waiting.

Judith Leipnitz Oct 31, 2014 at 01:36 PM

Hi Mary, Linc, Dixie - My sister Sandy and I are scheduled to arrive on Air France Flight 8516 from Paris at 11:55. Looks like we should have enough people to make the water taxi a viable option if we all arrive on time. I have info on free carts (need Euro coin) and the walkway to the piers, where the water taxi and Alilaguna are near each other. We should not buy our Alilaguna tickets until we see which means of transportation we will take. I suggest we meet at the public transportation counter in the arrivals terminal. We will look for you first at baggage claim 3. We should be able to check the info boards at the airport to see if the other flight is on time. We should set a time beyond which we won't wait. How about 1:20? At least now, we'll all have a group, as the three of you are on the same flight. How does this plan sound?
Robert "Linc" Clay Nov 02, 2014 at 07:58 AM

That sounds fine to us (Linc and Dixie). We will look for you at baggage claim 3.

Debby and Phil Lewis Oct 27, 2014 at 11:53 AM

Hi all - Phil and I arrive at 2:05 - too late I'm afraid to connect with you 11:40 people on Alilaguna. If anyone else is arriving near 2:00 let us know! If not, we'll see you at the hotel (I'm hoping we'll be able to make it to the 4:00 on time!)
Sterling Lauer Oct 27, 2014 at 06:44 PM

Greetings! This is a reply to the discussion about the transportation from the airport to the hotel in Venice. We did this trip last year (it was wonderful!), and after reading many trip reports from various sites, we opted to take a taxi, and were SO glad we did, because the taxi took us directly to the hotel dock. Others who opted for the Alilaguna had to drag their luggage from the Rialto stop, and it was difficult. Some couldn't find the hotel on their own, and it took hours to get there. So you might want to consider the taxi.

Robert "Linc" Clay Oct 27, 2014 at 09:02 AM

Dixie & I also are scheduled to arrive on KL 1653 at 11:40. We would love to join you all. The Alilaguna web site says tickets are available in the airport at the transportation ticket office and near baggage claim 3 & 5. The airport map (Italian version) shows three ticket locations in the baggage claim area. (The English version does not show these, but I assume/hope they are really there....) Should we pick a baggage claim location to meet?
Mary Williams Oct 27, 2014 at 03:27 PM

Let's choose baggage flame 3, and if that office is not open, go to the transportation ticket office.
Robert "Linc" Clay Oct 28, 2014 at 11:11 AM

Meeting at baggage #3 sounds good to us. If we get a critical mass of folks (5 or 6) we could consider a water taxi per Sterling's comment. We are traveling light and we have downloaded mapping apps plus have paper maps, so while I expect Venice navigation to be a challenge, I believe that we can figure it out. It is only about 200 or 300 yards to the hotel from the Rialto stop. I have walked it backward in Google streetview, so I assume we can navigate there successfully, although not necessarily flawlessly....

Mary Williams Oct 24, 2014 at 05:31 PM

I arrive in Venice at 11:40 am and plan to take the Alilaguna to the Rialto stop and then walk to the hotel. I was in Venice 18 months ago and consider the Alilaguna to be more comfortable when you have luggage than the vaporetto/bus method of getting there. It is more expensive (15 euros), but not nearly as expensive as a taxi and, like a taxi, you travel across the lagoon toward Venice by water. If anyone is arriving about the same time, we could go together.

Hi Mary - My sister and I are scheduled to arrive at the Venice airport at 11:55 a.m. on November 7. Do you have an idea of what would be a good meeting place? It sounds like you could be our transportation guide.
Mary Williams Oct 26, 2014 at 08:15 AM

The first place I will go is to the place in the airport that sells Alilaguna tickets -- I don't know where that is, but I'm sure there will be signs or an information desk. We could meet there, with our Road Scholar luggage tags. My flight number (from Amsterdam) is KL 1653 (in case my flight is delayed). What is yours?
