Hi. I'm going on the Sept 10-24 trip and looking for anyone else that is going. Is anyone out there?
Mary Raynard Apr 13, 2014 at 04:40 PM

Hi Janice - I'm going on the Sept 10-24 program, flying from Denver, CO. Where are you starting from?
Janice Beck Apr 13, 2014 at 07:07 PM

I'm starting from Philadelphia, PA. I haven't spoken to the transportation people yet so I don't know where my stops are before Nairobi. Are you planning your own flight or going thru Road Scholar?
Mary Raynard Apr 13, 2014 at 10:01 PM

I'm letting Road Scholar plan the travel. I'm a novice at this, so need all the help I can get! They have been very helpful. the first itinerary they suggested gave me a very short time to change planes in one place, so I asked for another option. They provided a new and better option right away. I go from Denver to Atlanta to Amsterdam to Nairobi.

Can anyone tell me about the vaccinations that are required for this program? Do we need to get yellow fever vaccination?
Diana Stephen Mar 21, 2014 at 09:47 PM

You need a yellow fever vaccination for Tanzania or a waiver of same fro our physician. In Louisville, we have an International Travel Clinic. I just bring the detailed itinerary to them and they tell me what they would recommend. They recited a list of warnings of taking the yellow fever shot if you are over 65, but we took it and had no difficulty.
Diana Stephen Mar 21, 2014 at 09:48 PM

Should have read, waiver of same from your physician.

Are you going on the June 9 trip?
Betsy Noyce Feb 23, 2014 at 05:46 PM

No,sorry-14th of July
Mary Raynard Mar 04, 2014 at 04:13 PM

Hi Betsy - I've changed my trip so that I am now going in September (we have a new grandbaby due to arrive in July). Hope we'll hear from you all about it!
Michele Brandenburg Mar 28, 2014 at 03:50 PM

Betsy - My husband & I will be joining you on the July 14 trip
Betsy Noyce Mar 31, 2014 at 09:31 PM

That's great! We look forward to meeting you. Betsy and Jeff

susan donaldson Feb 15, 2014 at 07:06 AM

My husband and I just signed up for the Kenya/Tanzania trip for June 9, and we would like to meet people who are joining us. I'd also like to hear if the zip-off bugfree pants do the job. Also, any other tips on "packing/not packing" would be wonderful. We are traveling from Florida, and we are excited!
Barbara Marschke Mar 31, 2014 at 07:03 PM

You can take the zip off pants, they work fine. I took 3 pair, but would have been more comfortable in light weight slacks and/or capris and some sandles. You are usually in Safari Vans or in the Lodges and it gets warm. In the morning, however, it can be quite cool so it is a good idea to layer. Forget the clothesline, etc. You can send laundry out or hang clothes on a hanger. They dry in no time in the dry climate. I never wore my hat or heavier jacket.

Mary Raynard Feb 13, 2014 at 02:07 AM

Question for those who have gone before: should we bring our own soap/shampoo? Any advice about what to bring and what to leave behind? Are you able to phone/email home?
Roger McCann Feb 13, 2014 at 08:04 AM

We went on the Jan. 27 safari. Soap and shampoo were available. Phone service is available if you have the right phone. (The guide and drivers used their phones.) Wifi is available for free at the hotel in Nairobi and for a fee at the lodges (if the electricity is on). Definitely bring a small flashlight.
Mary Raynard Feb 14, 2014 at 12:36 AM

thanks Roger!

Julia Cooper Feb 09, 2014 at 10:40 AM

just came back from the jan 20th. Hot air balloon rides are available in both serengeti and Masai Mara. Cost is about $450.But included in the trip is a 30min plane ride to the Mara which is quite low and animals can be seen. Just a thought.

Nella Gladding Feb 09, 2014 at 01:53 AM

Does anyone know if there is a chance to take a hot air balloon ride while on the Kenya/ Tanzania trip?
Beth Jones Feb 09, 2014 at 03:24 AM

I took one on the trip last July. I believe it was $450.
Diana Stephen Feb 09, 2014 at 01:54 PM

The hot air balloon ride, taken at Masai Mara, was $450. Worth every penny. It was my first balloon ride and it was an awesome experience. There is a champagne breakfast following the ride out in the open plains. Quite fantastic!
Nella Gladding Feb 16, 2014 at 03:43 PM

Thank you for the info on the hot air balloon ride. Did you bring cash to pay for the ride or do they take credit cards? Also, were there hair dryers in the room or should I bring my own?

Nella Gladding Feb 07, 2014 at 10:01 PM

Hi Barbara Marschke and Timothy Flagg. I am on the Feb. 24th Kenya/Tanzania safari. Are you and your friends going to be some of our fellow travelers? I am traveling with two other women.
Barbara Marschke Feb 08, 2014 at 11:57 AM

Yes, I am traveling with you and my friend, Rose Marie, will be on the trip as well.
Mary Thompson Feb 19, 2014 at 03:56 PM

Tony and I will also be on the Feb 24th trip. Just thought I would check in and see if any one else was posting.
