Anyone going on the May 6th trip? My husband and I are going to Cape Town from May 1 -May 6 and plan to hire a guide for Cape Town and the Garden Route, in case anyone else had considered this....

I'm on the African Safari program #13938 departing from Washington Dulles Airport on South African Airways at 5:40 pm on Feb. 5. Anyone else on that flight?
Sue Kremer Jan 05, 2016 at 08:46 PM

My sister and I will watch for you. We arrive from Chicago several hours earlier that day. Getting very excited!
Mazel Pernell Jan 07, 2016 at 09:41 PM

Great. Looking forward to meeting you.

Janet Robertson Jan 05, 2016 at 06:57 PM

I'm traveling as a single, but have signed up for a double room since all the single rooms were taken for the February 5 departure. Am interested in being in contact with my future roommate before meeting in Johannesburg, are you a single who has signed up for a roommate?
Gary Kerkow Jan 05, 2016 at 09:00 PM

We depart on Jan. 15 for our Africa trip. Gary & Shirley

Generally how much cash should I bring? I am assuming small denomination US bills.
Frank Krutchik Jan 02, 2016 at 05:29 PM

Zimbabwe uses only U.S. dollars. We used an ATM machine to get South African Rand, primarily for the Cape Town extension. Most of our purchases and restaurant bills were paid by credit card. Tipping is covered by R.S., so our small U.S. bills were not so important. We used $50 in small bills, and another $200 in larger U.S. bills.

Sharon Walker Dec 22, 2015 at 02:36 PM

are mosquito spray and sunscreen readily available or do we need to bring them both?
Eva Putnam Dec 22, 2015 at 03:03 PM

They were not readily available especially when we stayed at the safari lodges. We took our own.
Sharon Walker Dec 22, 2015 at 05:19 PM

good to know - thanks!

Sue Kremer Dec 18, 2015 at 04:22 PM

To past participants...if you took the helicopter ride during your free afternoon in Livingston, did you make reservations before departing the States? Thanks for the input.

RS as opposed to OAT,specifically 13938RJ--Ultimate Africa.Comments please.
Annetta Gross Dec 12, 2015 at 03:15 PM

We have friends who use only OAT and we often compare trips. They have more really adventurous experiences while RS isn't quite as daring. It seems that RS stays is nicer places and is a notch up. OAT is always a small group and many of our trips have had small groups. I think it depends on your age -- younger folks like OAT and most seniors lean towards RS.

A comment from almost a year ago says that white shoes are not recommended but I did not see why they are not recommended. Does anyone know? I was thinking of wearing my sneakers which are white.
Frank Krutchik Dec 11, 2015 at 03:23 PM

White and bright colored shirts & pants are not recommended because these would make you more visible to the animals. White shoes are fine, although the red clay in the soil will turn them red. We donated our white tennis shoes after the safari portion of our trip.
