Day Twelve: Monday, January 12 - Nagasaki, Japan - Nagasaki Overview
Breakfast: Breakfast on board the ship

Morning: Nagasaki was the most important of only a very few ports open to restricted numbers of foreign traders during Japan’s period of isolation. Dutch workers were the only westerners allowed to remain in the country and they were restricted to Dejima, a man-made island constructed in 1636, during Japan’s two centuries of isolation. Discover the old colonial district, viewing the historical buildingd that remain: various residences, warehouses, walls and gates. Located on a hill where Western merchants settled after the period of isolation is Glover Garden, an open-air museum exhibiting mansions of these former residents, including the mansions of British and Scottish merchants. View the mansions and enjoy the panoramic view over Nagasaki city. Above Nagasaki’s Peace Park, commemorating the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in 1945, stands the sobering Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum. Visit the museum and gain an understanding of the fearsome destructive power of the atomic bombing.

Day Fifteen: Thursday, January 15 - Miyajima, Japan - Itsukushima Shrine
Breakfast: Breakfast on board the ship

Morning: Walk from the quay where Minerva’s tenders come ashore and discover the sacred area of the Itsukushima Shrine. The shrine was established in 593, with most of the main shrine built in the 12th century. Twenty-one buildings are laid out around the main sanctuary, and the buildings are connected with corridors painted in red that extend to encircle it. The layout was cleverly designed to make the shrine resemble a bird stretching its wings when viewed from the opposite shore. The shrine's torii gate rises 16 metres above the sea. Its columns, made of camphor, 10 metres in circumference, and supported by pairs of small pillars, are buried in the seabed. The present torii dates from 1875. At high tide, both the torii and shrine seem to float on the sea. UNESCO designated Itsukushima Shrine a World Heritage site in 1996.
