Day Two: Tuesday, May 20 - Breakfast/Teddy Roosevelt/Lunch/ Trip to Booker ...
Breakfast/Teddy Roosevelt/Lunch/ Trip to Booker T. Washington's Birthplace and National Monument/Dinner/Teddy Roosevelt

Note: Our short trip to and tour of Booker T. Washington's Birthplace and National Monument will entail walking a short distance and standing for approximately 45 minutes.

Breakfast: Our first breakfast at the Center will begin at 7:30 AM - the buffet line will remain open until 8:15; however, as is usually the case most participants will arrive early to begin sampling the fare.

Morning: The morning period of instruction will begin at 8:45 providing ample time to freshen up after breakfast. From 8:45 until Noon we'll begin to learn about the many facets of the life and times of Teddy Roosevelt beginning with his influential family tree.

Lunch: Lunch is served from Noon until 12:45 and everyone is urged to eat a hearty one since we'll be visiting Booker T. Washington's birthplace during the afternoon.

Afternoon: At the birthplace of Booker T. Washington you'll be enthralled and uplifted by one of the nation's most stirring stories of an individual who rose from slavery and abject poverty to become a respected educator and early African American civil rights leader. Booker T. Washington was born on the Burroughs Plantation in 1856 and through his own intelligence and ambition became the founder of Tuskegee Institute and eventually an adviser to three U.S. Presidents - including, most prominently, Teddy Roosevelt. After viewing an introductory film we'll begin our trip around the site. You'll be amazed at the size and location of the plantation "big house" and the building where Washington, his mother and siblings lived and worked. We'll return to the Center just in time for Dinner.

Dinner: Dinner at 5:30.

Evening: We'll continue our review of Roosevelt's life to include his marriages, early health problems and his affinity for the "Wild West" which influenced him in becoming one of the early conservationists.

Day Three: Wednesday, May 21 - Breakfast/Teddy Roosevelt/Lunch/ Trip to the Peak...
Breakfast/Teddy Roosevelt/Lunch/ Trip to the Peaks of Otter on the Blue Ridge Parkway/Tour of the National D-Day Memorial/ Dinner/Evening Entertainment

Note: A busy and stimulating day! We'll travel to the Peaks of Otter on a coach/van and have an (optional) opportunity to enjoy a very brief hike on the Appalachian Trail. The tour of the National D-Day Memorial will require walking a short distance and standing for approximately 45 minutes. Golf carts available for those not able or desiring to walk.

Breakfast: Another trip to "Aunt Mandy's" breakfast buffet beginning at 7:30.

Morning: Class begins at 8:45 and you won't want to be late since your instructor has a great deal more to tell and show us about Teddy Roosevelt. Roosevelt's presidential years were ones filled with change, opportunities and challenges and Teddy met them all with his typical enthusiasm and boyish vigor.

Lunch: Lunch again at Noon.

Afternoon: It's just a 45 minute ride to the Peaks of Otter on the Blue Ridge Parkway and we'll have an opportunity to view the beautiful vistas overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains on both sides of the motor coach/van. We'll also have a chance to walk on a very short portion of the Appalachian Trail near an overlook which will provide us with a spectacular view of the Shenandoah Valley. We'll then board the coach/van for a short drive to the National D-Day Memorial. The Memorial - a stirring monument to those who participated in the D-Day landing on June 6, 1944 - is located in Bedford, VA because this little town of around 3,200 people lost 22 young men in the invasion effort, thereby proportionately suffering the severest losses of any community in the country. We'll arrive back at the Center in time for dinner at 5:30.

Dinner: The last dinner at the Center at 5:30.

Evening: The entertainment will leave you pleasantly surprised and finally mesmerized by the talent on display. Since you all have a long trip home tomorrow the "show" will conclude by 10 PM.

Lodging: Smith Mountain Lake 4-H Educational Conference Center

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day Four: Thursday, May 22 - Breakfast/Check out of Rooms/Teddy Roosevelt/ Lun...
Note: The morning will be spent in the classroom.

Breakfast: Our last breakfast together so try to get around to everyone's table to say goodbye since some Participants with many miles to travel sometimes depart after breakfast.

Morning: You'll have until class starts (8:45) to check out of your rooms; however, if you need more time, just let us know and we can arrange a later "check out" time. We'll finish our review of Roosevelt's event filled life to include his abortive attempt to return to the Presidency in 1916 which effectively gave the election to Woodrow Wilson. Roosevelt's life after his service as President was almost as exciting as his time in office and we'll explore this period of time as well.

Lunch: Our final meal together.

Afternoon: Departure. Have a safe trip home and please come back to visit us soon.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
