It was fought between the German and French armies from February 21st to December 18, 1916, on hilly terrain north of the city of Verdun-sur-Meuse in North Eastern France. The Battle of Verdun ended in a French victory since the German High Command failed to achieve its two strategic objectives: capture the city of Verdun and a much higher casualty count inflicted on the French adversary. As a whole, the Battle of Verdun resulted in more than a quarter of a milion battlefield deaths. We will then take the coach to the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery where there will be an on-site lecture.

Other places to see are the market square, the baroque town hall, the Martinsbrunnen (a feature of the town's historical water supply), St. Martin's Church, the former Capuchin monastery (now an arts centre) and sections of the old town walls including the town gates: Enderttor, Mäusetor and Balduinstor. Worth seeing are the remains of the old town wall, for example the "Endert Gate Tower" with its adjoining Guard House dating back to 1332, the fortified tower and "Balduin's gate" near the churchyard wall in the "Obergasse," the "Burgfrieden gate" and gangway, the beautiful baroque styled town hall built in 1739, the market-place with its "Martin's Fountain" and the old gabled houses built on steep, narrow alleys.

Day Eight: Saturday, October 04 - Koblenz- Rudesheim
Breakfast: Breakfast buffet on board.

Morning: While we cruise, view the scenic parts of the Rhine: castles, vinyards, and the Rock of Lorelei. Lorelei is also the name of one of the beautiful Rhine Maidens who, legend has it, lured navigators of this river to their dooms with their alluring singing, much like the Sirens of ancient Greek myth. Most famous is the poem Die Lore-Ley by Heinrich Heine, which tells of the titular female as a kind of siren luring shipmen to distraction with her singing, who then crash on the rocks in the riverbed. Heine's poem was labelled as, "written by unknown writer" during the Third Reich because it was too popular to ban it completely for its Jewish authorship.

Lunch: On board.

Afternoon: We will take the Winzerexpress from the ship to Broemserburg. We will then explore Rudesheim on a walking tour.

Dinner: On board.

Evening: Take some free time in Drosselgasse which is the heart of Rudesheim's old town, full of beautifully decorated restaurants. Live band entertainment, brass instruments and dance music play all day and all night during the summer in the many wine taverns and open-air garden taverns along the 144-metre-long narrow cobblestone pedestrian street. Built in the 15th century, Drosselgasse was for boat owners to move items from the river to homes in the town.
