Breakfast: Breakfast in hotel

Morning: CLASS: Architecture from the Pyramids to Wright

Lunch: Lunch in hotel

Afternoon: CLASS: From Buffoon to Philosopher King: The Many Faces of Abraham Lincoln

This course will examine the different visions Americans have held about Lincoln from his own time to the present. While most Americans have regarded him as a “secular saint” and granted him a place in the pantheon of our nation’s greatest heroes, others have ridiculed him as a country bumpkin, or decried him as a dictator. Most contemporary historians see the “Great Emancipator” as the foremost advocate for African American freedom and equality, but others view him as a racist and hypocrite. We will sift through the kaleidoscopic images of Lincoln as they evolved over the years, and make an assessment of which views are valid, and which are unfair.

Note: Four hour field trip to Stanford University for docent-led visit of the Hanna "Honeycomb" House. The house has a very steep driveway; buses are not allowed up the driveway so participants must be able to walk up and back down the driveway without assistance. Canes, walkers and wheelchairs are not advised. From the driveway to the terrace there are about 15 steps, lower than the height of an average step.

Breakfast: Breakfast in hotel

Morning: FIELD TRIP: Docent-led visit of Hanna House at Stanford University

Hanna House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1936 for Stanford professor Paul Hanna and his wife, Jean. Wright had become interested in designing elegant and affordable homes for the American middle class to create a more harmonious, enlightened society. The long-term collaboration between the Hannas and Wright resulted in an unprecedented design: a house based on hexagonal geometry, with no right angles in the floor plan. This radical experimentation allowed Wright to explore open spatial planning. Hanna House was a turning point in his career, leading to ideas later evidenced in the Guggenheim Museum in New York. The Hannas lived in the house until giving it to Stanford in 1975. It housed four university provosts until suffering severe damage in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. It underwent complex restoration, made complicated by its unique design, and reopened to the public in 1999. (Courtesy of the Hanna House)

Check the website at: hannahousetours.stanford.edu and click on Learn About then click on House and Garden Views. The site will have a map of the house. Click on any of the rooms and you will see pictures of each room included in the tour.
