ORIENTATION: 5:00pm. We will gather in our private meeting room and begin with introductions. We will review the up-to-date daily schedule, discuss responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, provide you with key staff contact names and phone numbers, and answer any questions you may have.
Berea is proud to be recognized as the "Folk Arts and Crafts Capital of Kentucky" attracting thousands of visitors annually. This new Intergenerational program is somewhat different from others you may have attended in that you will have opportunities to work in very small groups with outstanding craft-persons who will give you personalized attention. We will have non-crafts activities and meals as a group so you can meet new people and make new friends.
The focus of the program is working on several craft projects with artists and artisans in Berea’s Old Town Craft Village. The preparatory materials included a form for you to select your preferred crafts and we will do our best to match everyone with the crafts of their choice. Some crafts will have very few spaces and others more depending on what is involved and how the craft-person prefers to work. At the end of the program, you will have something special to take home with you.Dinner: Dinner is in the main dining room. The community’s history is intertwined with Berea College, founded in 1855 as a model for educating men and women of all races. The college largely serves Appalachian students, charging no tuition and requiring all students to work in a college industry. Berea’s student craft business began in 1883, and today more than 200 students and craft professionals in the community produce weaving, woodcraft, needlecraft, ceramics, broomcraft, and wrought iron products that are marketed internationally.Lunch: We will return to Boone Tavern Restaurant for a buffet with choices of soup, salad, and main course.Afternoon: Returning to the Artisans Village, we will work on a second craft project with another local master crafts-person. Berea is also home to the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen, representing outstanding artists, craftsmen, collectors, galleries, interested individuals and businesses in Kentucky and surrounding states. Founded in 1961, it is the oldest organization in Kentucky working to preserve and promote the rich heritage and exciting future of art and craft.Dinner: Dinner at Boone Tavern Restaurant features outstanding Southern cooking and mouth-watering original dishes with fresh ingredients from local farms, including choices for kids, served family style.Evening: EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Skittles & Ice Cream Social. Skittles has been a favorite Berea College game for generations, and one of only two places in the country where the oblong wooden box and pins are made, handcrafted from tulip poplar. It is a game of luck as much as skill, where each player spins a top onto the “field” and scores points based on which pins the top knocks over.
