Description: Found in the heart of the park is Giant City Lodge. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, it is in perfect keeping with the spirit of the park. Multi-hued sandstone and white oak timber were two of the native building materials used. The spacious and historic Lodge has a rustic beauty that creates an atmosphere found nowhere else in Southern Illinois. The Bald Knob dining room, with seating for 200, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily, with an excellent reputation for food and hospitality. You’re sure to enjoy some of the best fried chicken ever if you choose the specialty of the Lodge, our all-you-can-eat Family Style Chicken Dinner.

Afternoon: Plan to arrive between 4:00 - 5:00 PM for program registration and check-in. If arriving early, participants can visit the Visitor's Center or walk the trails.

Evening: Program overview, introductions. Presentation on natural divisions of Southern Illinois.

Day Two: Monday, November 04 - See raptors up close with wildlife rehabilitator.
Breakfast: In Lodge Restaurant

Morning: Bev Shofstall, from Free Again Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, will provide a look into wildlife rehabilitation, specifically with birds of prey. Live hawks, eagles and owls will be studied up close and participants may be able to handle specific birds, although species may vary depending on the time of year.

Lunch: In the field.

Afternoon: Field trip to Giant City State Park. Options may include 1 mile hike on chipped trail or viewing from overlook to search for woodpeckers and hawks in flight.

Dinner: Family style in the Lodge Restaurant

Evening: Raptor species and identification techniques for use in the field.

Day Three: Tuesday, November 05 - Explore beautiful and diverse cypresss swamp.
Breakfast: In Lodge Restaurant

Morning: Field trip to the Cache River Wetlands, including Heron Pond Nature Preserve. Birding and swamp ecology are the focus of this trip. Search for Northern Harrier, several species of woodpeckers, and hawks in migration.

Lunch: In the field.

Afternoon: Continuation of Cache River Wetlands field trip. Explore the diversity of bottomland forests and ancient cypress swamps on a flat hike into this primeval ecosystem.

Dinner: In Lodge restaurant

Evening: Evening owl prowl. Presentation on owls and evening search and calling for native owl species.

Day Four: Wednesday, November 06 - Get an in-dpeth look at the ancient art of falcon...
Breakfast: In Lodge restaurant

Morning: Field trip to areas within Shawnee National Forest. Ozark limestone bluffs and the Missippi River floodplain offer the opportunity to see numerous raptors. Species may include Sharp-Shinned, Cooper's, and Red-Shouldered hawks, as well as Bald Eagles.

Lunch: In the field.

Afternoon: Field excursion to release a rehabilitated bald eagle. Regional wildlife rehabilitator will describe how this eagle was found, injured, and rehabilitated and we will have the opportunity to witness the release of this eagle back into the wild. We will also join U.S. Fish and Wildlife Biologist on a behind-the-scenes tour of eagle nesting sites on the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge.

Dinner: In Lodge restaurant

Evening: Join local singer/songwriter and storyteller Curt Carter as he weaves an evening of songs and stories that reflect his love of rivers and passion for the natural world. His songs will take you from southwestern deserts, to Montana mountains, the rediscovery site of the Ivory-billed woodpecker "Bayou de View" to the Cache River in southern Illinois......the place he calls home.

Day Five: Thursday, November 07 - Interpretive hike within Giant City State Park. ...
Interpretive hike within Giant City State Park. Program ends at 10:00 am.

Morning: Hike within Giant City State Park to learn about natural and cultural history of this region.
