Description: This stately hotel is a beautiful stone building, overlooking a small lake. It has a beautiful, spacious lobby with a fireplace and comfortable furniture for fellowship, puzzles and games, or just relaxing. The building was made from native stone that sparkles with mica. The dining room is in the same building as our housing and meeting facilities, and an elevator serves all floors (except for 7 steps going into one main meeting area). Of Montreat's 4,000 acres, 2,500 acres are dedicated to wilderness and are entered in the NC Registry of National Heritage Areas, and we have more than a dozen maintained hiking trails. Tennis courts also available. We will have board and card games in the lobby for your enjoyment, but if you have a favorite, please feel free to bring it along. An outdoor pool is located on the grounds, but it not open during our Road Scholar programs (only open June 1 - first week in August). However, a lovely fitness center (Cheshire Fitness) is located just a few miles away, and they offer daily or weekly rates for visitors. There are no TVs or phones in the individual housing rooms, but there is a TV in the main lobby, and guests can be reached by leaving a message at the front desk (staffed 24 hours a day). If it is urgent, the front desk staff will contact the coordinator who will deliver the message in person, otherwise a note will be left on the guest's housing door. A quiet reading room is also available, located near the main lobby of the Assembly Inn.

Day One: Sunday, November 10 - Orientation
Afternoon: Arrival at the Assembly Inn, check in between 3 - 5:30 p.m. Registration for our program will be from 4 - 5:30 in the lower lobby of the Assembly Inn. Spend some time walking around the lovely grounds (concrete and gravel paths surround Lake Susan), venture out with your map to explore the campus or just enjoy meeting folks in the upper lobby.

Dinner: Join us for a scrumptious dinner in the Galax Dining Room, located on the first floor of the Assembly Inn. A full salad bar, choise of two different entrees, vegetables, rolls/bread, fruit and dessert will tempt your taste buds. Sweet/unsweeted tea, coffee, hot water w/ tea or cold water at our beverage stations, Dinner will be served between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m.

Evening: Our opening program/orientation will be at 7 p.m. in Convocation Hall (also in the Assembly Inn). We'll spend some time giving you some history and orientation to this special pace, reviewing the schedule for the week, and you'll have an opportunity to meet and hear from your instructors. We know you're tired from your travels, so our evening with end around 8 p.m. with some "get to know you activities." Refreshments, fellowship/games/puzzles await those who desire to stay up a little later.

Day Two: Monday, November 11 - History of the Universe Class, History of the Chr...
History of the Universe Class, History of the Christian Church Class, and History of Folk Song Class

Breakfast: Assembly Inn Dining Room 7:30 - 8:30 AM. Whether you like muffins, pancakes or waffles, bacon or sausage, grits or oatmeals, biscuits and gravy or a bowl of cereal and some fruit, breakfast in the Galax Dining Room is sure to please! Breakfast is the most imporant meal of the day!

Morning: Our early morning class begins our discussion of "The History of Everything," with David Dyer. We'll begin with the history of the universe and then discuss the history of the Earth. We'll take a break for refreshments mid-morning, and then return to the classroom for our course on "The History ofthe Christian Church" also with David Dyer. This morning, we'll discuss the founding of the Christian movement.

Lunch: Assembly Inn Dining Room between 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. The lunch menu varies each day. Today's memu will probably be "deli sandwich" day. A full salad bar, some chips and/or some soup will fill you up (but save room for a little something sweet).

Afternoon: Our afternoon course focuses on "Folk Song History." We start out with an introduction... what is a folk song? We'll review the Colonial Period... the British and Celtic tradition--the ancient ballads, marches, dance tunes, carols, sea songs and sacred songs. Then we'll take a look at the American Revolution and how the story is told vividly through the songs. This especially provides insight into the mood and meaning of the struggle for freedom. Lastly, we'll explore the Early National Period... from the end of the Revolution through the War of 1812 and discuss the spirit of national pride and self assurance... the Age of Romanticism... and the French Revolution. After class ends, we'll have an optional Walk Around Montreat... hear some of the history and stories about Montreat while you become acquainted with the buildings on the grounds.

Dinner: Ready for another yummy dinner? Join us in the Galax Dining Room between 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Evening: Our evening program will begin at 7 p.m. After, enjoy games, cards and tv available in the lounge for fellowship. Perhaps a movie on a big screen, if the group is interested.

Day Three: Tuesday, November 12 - History of the Universe Class, History of the Chr...
History of the Universe Class, History of the Christian Church Class, History of Folk Song Class, and Optional Hike

Breakfast: A hearty breakfast is served from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. in the Assembly Inn Dining Room. Breakfast options change each day, but always include fresh fruit, cereal, yogurt, granola, baked pasteries, orange juice (and another juice option). Fresh coffee or hot tea will start your morning off right!

Morning: Our early morning class continues our discussion of "The History of Everything," with David Dyer. We explore the history of life and the history of the human species. We will enjoy a half hour refreshment break and then we'll return to the classroom for the late morning lecture, "The History of Christianity," where we'll discuss the early Church Fathers and development of an orthodox theology.

Lunch: Lunch is served from 12:15 - 1:15 in the Assembly Inn Dining Room. Today's feature: Taco Tuesday! Enjoy Mexican dishes... build your own taco or burrito, or make a Mexican salad. All the trimmings make for a delicious and fun lunch...including tortilla chips and melted cheese... sour cream and peppers. Top it all off with some warm peach cobbler and ice cream. Yum Yum!

Afternoon: Our afternoon course on Folk Song History with Anne Lough takes us into the Jacksonian America period (1815 - 1848) and Songs of the Sea (1815 - 1860... the golden age of sail). We'll talk about how the rivers and canals carried much of the country's goods and people prior to the coming of the railroad. Samples of songs: Blow the Man Down, Glendy Burke, The Erie Canal. After class, we'll have an opportunity for an optional hike in the mountains.

Dinner: Assembly Inn Dining Room between 5:30 to 6:30 PM.

Evening: Evening programs are typically a fun event -- a dance, a concert, or a storyteller games/cards/tv available in lobby for fellowship and optional movie on big screen.

Breakfast: Come on down to the Galax Dining room for another great breakfast buffet, served from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m.

Morning: Our early morning class continues our discussion of "The History of Everything," with David Dyer. This morning, we'll be talking together about ancient history and the middle ages. We will break for a half hour to enjoy refreshments. Our late morning class, "The History of Christianity," focuses on the creation of the Roman Catholic church and the split between eastern and western Christianity. (David Dyer)

Lunch: Assembly Inn Dining Room between 12:15- 1:15 PM.

Afternoon: Free time to explore the area! We offer plenty of materials to help you discover your interests.

Dinner: Assembly Inn Dining Room between 5:30 to 6:30 PM.

Evening: Our evening courses focuses on Immigration (about 4 million came to America during this period, mostly from western Europe, British Isles, Germany and Scandinavia. From there, we'll explore the pioneers and western movement, the lumberman (until the end of the 19th Century, one of the most dangerous and necessary of frontier occupations), and the Gold Rush of 1849. Sample songs: Danny Boy, Hush Little Baby, Skip to My Lou, the Lumberman's Alphabet, Oh California, and Clementine.

Day Five: Thursday, November 14 - History of the Universe Class, History of the Chr...
History of the Universe Class, History of the Christian Church Class, and History of Folk Song Class

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet served from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. in the Assembly Inn Dining Room. If you haven't tried the grits yet, you really should!

Morning: Our early morning class continues our discussion of "The History of Everything" with David Dyer. Our theme this morning is "modern times." Enjoy a half hour refreshment break and then return to class for our presentation on the "History of Christianity," with David Dyer. We'll discuss the growth of monasticism, Protestant Reformation, and the proliferation of denominationalism.

Lunch: Assembly Inn Dining Room between 12:30 - 1:30 PM.

Afternoon: During our afternoon program on Folk Song History, we'll pick up with the music from the Southern Appalachians, where isolation kept traditions alive. Then we'll touch on some of the over 10,000 songs appearing and being promoted during the course of the Civil War (100 Lincoln songs alone). From there, we'll venture into the Golden Age of the Cowboy, the homestead act of 1862, railroading songs, variety shows, Vaudeville, religious folks hymns and songs and the flowering of composed folks songs. Samples: On Top of Old Smoky, Dixie, Goober Peas, Home on the Range, Little Old Sod Shanty of My Claim, I've Been Working on the Railroad, Frankie and Johnny, In the Sweet By and By, Blowin' In the Wind.

Dinner: Assembly Inn Dining Room between 5:30 to 6:30 PM.

Evening: Evening program: concert or storyteller games/cards/tv in lobby for fellowship (no movie tonight).

Morning: During our early morning class on the "History of Everything," we'll have a swift survey of American Presidents and then wrap up. We will take a half hour refreshment break to allow folks to check out of their rooms. (check out by 11 a.m.) At 10:45, we will reconvene to discuss with David Dyer the shape of the Christian Churches in the United States as we finish up the program on the "History of Christianity." Around 12:15 - 12:30 we'll have our closing program and then say our good-byes after lunch.
