Welcome to Portland! Check in and get to know each other/Orientation/Stuffed animal activity

Arrive To: Hotel check in begins at 3:00 PM. Program registration begins at 4:00 PM in the hotel lobby. Introductions will begin at 5:00 PM followed by dinner at 5:30 PM.

Get acquainted with the program at the orientation.

Dinner: Get to know your fellow participants as you enjoy a great meal at the hotel.

Evening: Make a stuffed animal companion at a workshop after dinner. Take him with you on your learning adventure and let him be a reminder of the wonderful time on this trip!

Note: During the visit to the farm and alpaca ranch expect to walk on unpaved and uneven surfaces.

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel

Morning: Hop on the bus for a ride out to the country to visit a farm, where you will see the life of farm animals, including chickens, horses, and may be sheep and a goat!

Lunch: Picnic lunch at the farm or in the vicinity.

Afternoon: Get to know these fun and woolly animals with our field trip to a working Alpaca ranch. Get up close to these curious and friendly animals as you feed them and learn about their history.

Then head to the Oregon Zoo.

Dinner: Dine at the zoo in preparation for your behind the scenes activities.

Evening: Visit Portland's remarkable Oregon Zoo for an after-hours experience. See the animals that are most active after the sun goes down.

Animal Tracking Workshop/Picnic and Naturalist Walk at Oxbow Park/ Free Evening

Note: Oxbow Park naturalist walk will be on unpaved and uneven roads in the park. If you choose to sit this activity out, you can do so in the covered shelter area by the river.

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.

Morning: Join an Audobon Society staff member in a hands-on exploration of animal tracking. Learn how to use claw marks, toes, heel pads and webbing to identify animals in the wild in this interactive workshop.

Lunch: Head out to the Oxbow Regional Park and enjoy a picnic lunch.

Afternoon: Apply your newly acquired skills of animal tracking as you walk with a naturalist at the Oxbow Park. Gain an insight into animal and bird behavior in the wild, see how many animal prints you can identify!

Dinner: Dinner is on your own with time to explore the area. Portland’s light rail system to downtown is located across the street from the hotel. The nearby Lloyd Center mall has restaurants and an ice rink. Your group leader will be happy to suggest some free time activities.

Evening: Get ready for a full day tomorrow with an early start!

Early start/ Travel to the Oregon Coast to Marine Science Center/ White Wolf Sanctuary

Note: Approximately two hour bus ride to the Oregon Coast. While at the White Wolf Sanctuary expect to walk on unpaved and uneven surfaces. You may stay on the deck at the house and still see the wolves.

Breakfast: Early breakfast at the hotel.

Morning: Travel to the Oregon Coast to the Hatfield Marine Science Center to discover the rocky intertidal habitat and the creatures that live there. Learn about the environmental forces that make this ever-changing habitat a challenging place to live, while investigating the relationships among living things and the interactions between them.

Lunch: At Izzy’s in Newport.

Afternoon: Travel to the White Wolf Sanctuary where you will meet 9 wolves who have come to the sanctuary from a variety of circumstances, and now are able to live out their lives in a safe and happy environment. Learn about the arctic wolves, their habits and instincts from Lois Tulleners, the owner of the sanctuary.

You do have a choice to pet the wolves through a fence, or to admire them from the pathway.

Dinner: Delicious menu at Ruby Tuesday in Corvallis awaits.

Evening: Will be spent traveling back to the hotel.

Audubon Society/Reptile Presentation/Mammal Presentation/Animal Storyteller

Breakfast: Enjoy breakfast at the hotel.

Morning: Explore a wilderness sanctuary in the city and look for creatures in their home environment. Visit the Audubon Society’s wildlife rehabilitation center to see how they rescue and treat injured and sick wildlife.

Lunch: Lunch will be served at the hotel.

Afternoon: Gain valuable educational information about the importance of reptiles in ecological diversity, suitability as pets and the safe and humane way to handle and care for them during Hart’s Reptile Presentation. Meet turtles, albino boa constrictor, and many other reptiles in Hart’s Reptile care.

Later, meet the incredible mammals such as chinchillas, bunnies, sugar gliders, hedgehogs and others. Learn about their life, diet, and habits!

Dinner: Dinner will be served at the hotel.

Evening: After dinner, a very special storyteller will tell you things you never knew about your favorite animal friends.
